Frank Caliendo sucks

Who the fuck thinks this guy is funny? The people “laughing” the hardest always seem to be Bradshaw or whoever he’s making fun of that week. I don’t think I’ve even chuckled once at his schtick.

He's got a gig outside of Fox?

Well, I guess that’s how the business works. I guess I just don’t find impressionists funny.

Impersonation gets old real quick.

But one skit a week isn’t too bad. I can’t imagine sitting through a full hour of one of his comedy gigs.

Disagree.

When you get 4 more turnovers than your opponent and you need a last second TD to win at home you’re probably not straight up better.

by Nate Dogg on Jan 15, 2012 2:20 PM PST up reply actions

Those turnovers are the product of the defense, though.

49ers have the better defense. Saints have the better offense.

by hazbro24 on Jan 15, 2012 2:23 PM PST up reply actions

Fumble recovery is pretty unpredictable and at least one of them was on special teams.

It was a really close game that the Niners needed every break to go their way. Hard to look at that and say they’re the better team.

by Nate Dogg on Jan 15, 2012 2:25 PM PST up reply actions

I aver they were the better team yesterday.

I’d agree with you if the Saints never got back in it, but they did, and that was after all the turnovers. They had 30 minutes to outplay the Niners in an even game and couldn’t do it.

"The time has come," the Walrus said, "to talk of many things."

by shams on Jan 15, 2012 2:27 PM PST up reply actions

That doesn't really make sense.

It’s an hour long game, and what happened in the first 30 minutes had an impact on what the situation was in the second 30.

A small impact, in this case.

I would say the 49ers defense controlled that game until the last 5 minutes when it turned into a shootout.

I was more surprised by the 49ers able to keep up on offense, though. I’m not saying the 49ers are clearly the better team, but their defense shut down the best offense in the league. That says a lot.

Doesn't an ankle down count as being down?

I seem to remember that it counts just the same as a knee, but thinking back I can’t remember where or why I think that.

In any case, it’s certainly possible. I know the rule because I saw it in a replay once.

I think it makes a difference if you remember that these guys often have huge calf muscles, giving more room than perhaps you and I to have it touch down without the knee being down.

I’ve been looking through the various “Mock Draft DBs” and haven’t found one that either makes sound picks for us, or makes sound picks ahead of us. Or they just don’t bother justifying their picks in any way. Like the people saying we should pick a WR because we don’t have any WRs that are explosive.

Eh

There aren’t many stars on this list. Some good players, but no one that’s really elite except maybe Steve Smith.

by Nate Dogg on Jan 15, 2012 3:42 PM PST up reply actions

Still not seeing a ton of starters, and when you consider how many are drafted I'm not sure you can say that receiver is easier to get in the later rounds than another position.

Brian Burke basically came to the same conclusion, although there is some variability.

It seems to be very difficult for teams to identify the better player between two closely matched potential draft picks, even for the #1 WR taken. But overall, they seem to have selected the better receivers in the top round. These results suggest a good strategy for picking a good WR with a very high draft pick is to trade down to pick the second or third WR available in the draft. Teams should have very little confidence that the highest rated WR will turn out any better than the second. On the other hand the #1 WRs tend to become the biggest stars, being selected to three or more Pro Bowls in one out of three cases.

As temperamental as they may be, top WR draft picks really do turn out to be stars far more often than later picks. They seem to be a lot like QBs. There is a real scarcity of talent at both positions, and it is difficult to predict with much certainty which ones will pan out. A team’s chances of finding a highly productive player are still better with a top pick.

by Nate Dogg on Jan 15, 2012 3:47 PM PST up reply actions

I guess it just depends on how to define a #1 WR.

Marques Colston is a #1 WR. Do I consider him elite? No. But because he’s the #1 in that system, he was a seventh-rounder that became a #1.

Wes Welker is a “#1” in the sense that he’s the top WR for NE but that only works for NE and maybe a few other teams. UDFA.

You can find your #1 WR based on your scheme, in any round.

Jordy Nelson and Greg Jennings, 2nd round, for instance.
Does that mean you ever pass on Calvin or Larry? No. Those guys transcend systems and that’s why they’re elite. But I guess we were just talking about different things Nate, and maybe let’s chalk it up to a misunderstanding or semantics.

Jimmy Graham. Even though he’s technically a TE. He lines up wide often and has receiver speed and has the body of a big/elite guy.

Andre looks like he’s fading too. Maybe it’s the hamstring, maybe it’s old man time. Green looks the part with a little more resume.

Megatron
Fitz
Andre
Graham

I wonder where the term elite gets to be TOO exclusive though?

Jordy Nelson was one of the most valuable wide receivers this season. At what point are we saying a WR can NOT be elite if he’s not a certain size? That’s like saying that Drew Brees can’t be elite because of his own size. Certain players over come size to be the best of the best. I will be watching Nelson this season with the purpose of… would he work in ANY system?

This isn’t me saying Nelson is, only wondering if he might be and I’ll watch for that. And other players. Before the year my elites were:
Fitz
Mega
Andre
Roddy

Edge:
Nicks

Want to believe:
Britt, pre-injury.

Wide Receiver is the 3rd most valuable position for elite talent

Pass blockers (offensive linemen) and pass defenders (defensive backs) follow a single-point failure model. Roughly speaking, you are as good as your worst player.

Positions where more talent/ability provides continually more effect are:

  1. Quarterback
  2. Pass Rusher
  3. Receiver

It would take too long to back this up and justify why I rank WRs at #3 ahead of defensive tackles and running backs, but you get the general theory. An elite receiver can be targeted as often as you like; a deep threat is necessary to make use of what talent you have for running the ball and throwing short.

by Jason_D on Jan 15, 2012 3:47 PM PST up reply actions

Well yes they do

But the chances of running into a left handed QB is fairly slim, and you can’t just change your technique each week or a couple times a year.

It takes a big man to admit when he's wrong. I am NOT a big man.

by SGT Lenny on Jan 15, 2012 3:58 PM PST up reply actions

He's still playing a single-piont-failure position

SPF:
Walter Jones versus all-pro DE = 0 sacks
Walter Jones versus elite DE = 0 sacks
Walter Jones versus above-average DE = 0 sacks
Walter Jones versus average DE = 0 sacks
Walter Jones versus bad DE = 0 sacks

Good LT versus all-pro DE = 1.5 sacks
Good LT versus elite DE = 0.5 sacks
Good LT versus above-average DE = 0 sacks
Good LT versus average DE = 0 sacks
Good LT versus bad DE = 0 sacks

Elite Upside:
Julius Peppers vs all-pro LT = 0 sacks
Julius Peppers vs elite LT = .5 sacks
Julius Peppers vs above-average LT = 1.5 sacks
Julius Peppers vs average LT = 2.5 sacks
Julius Peppers vs bad LT = 4 sacks

In other words, when you have an elite receiver or a pass rusher, you get to exploit all of his talent. When you have an elite guy at an SPF position, a portion of his talent is often wasted, because the best he can accomplish is to prevent the opponent from making a play.

You can’t move offensive linemen around, but pass rushers sometimes do move. More importantly, the defense dictates where and how they’ll rush (up the middle, outside, left side, right side) and how each pass rusher attacks. Chris Clemons can edge-rush nearly every single play, and if your LT is an elite talent at stopping the bull rush, it does you no good.

Similarly, it’s easier to move a receiver around than to move a defensive back. And the offense dictates where and how the receiver goes out for a pass. Wes Welker can be effective as an elite receiver by virtue of being an elite short-route and over-the-middle receiver, and nothing more, and if the opposing corner has elite talent defending the deep ball, it does him no good.

They can rush the passer.

That’s pretty much all they have going for them against SF.

Hope the Pats crush the Niners in the Super Bowl

But I don’t think any team can “crush” them.

wow, what a fail by Rodgers teammates

Today! Drops and fumbles. He can’t win it on his own.

Hope this is another point towards not benching your starters

and shutting it down for the playoffs.

Thanks for all that you do.

Seahawks have comparable receivers, but not quite as good.

And a far superior D. Better OL and better running game.

Rodgers at QB without the commercials

With our D… 1) the D won’t be on the field as long, therefore, they will not be gassed halfway through the game.

2) the WR’s aren’t bad in Seattle

3, 4, 5 and 6) Marshawn Lynch

Packers will get in the red zone and fumble.

Not sure what it was. Giants just seem like a veteran team who want it, all business.

10-6 Packers team wins the Super Bowl

15-1 team loses first playoff game. Go figure.

The Seahawks could easily be 10-6 next year!

at the very least a qb in waiting

a full off season with TJ could be a little better. Not expecting a whole lot more from him, but maybe enough to get by while the new QB learns the ropes.

From turn overs and onside kicks.
