NFL Playoffs Wildcard Weekend - Sunday Gamethread II
Bwuahahahahahaha Falcons
So far, Wildcard Weekend has been pretty dull. Here's to hoping the next game actually proves to be entertaining and exciting. What is on tap next? Broncos/Steelers?
Well poo.

I live in downtown Denver
3:1 Steelers jerseys to Broncos, based on random samples of glancing out my window.
Gonna be a lot of lamentation in a couple hours.

Hmm, Ahnold and Big Ben...there are similarities, now that I think about it.
"The time has come," the Walrus said, "to talk of many things."
It would fit NFL narratives quite well

is not infallible.
I’m not saying it’s going to happen, but the plucky underdog nobody thinks will win can surprise. I think they have a better shot than we did with the Saints.
Anything can happen, but I couldn't disagree more.
Still I hope it’s a good game. And I’ll be rooting for Denver.

I heard good things about it.
Mainly concerned about Moffatt producing it, but Cumberbatch and Simms look pretty good together.
Thoughts?
"You are the molders of their dreams." - Clark Mollenhoff
Moffatt is doing a lot better with Sherlock than he is since he took over Dr Who
Cumberbatch is AMAZING. Carries the series, with all its clever writing and snappy dialogs, his performance is really what you check in for. Well, and McGuigan has a lot of fun with weird editing/directing.
Simm? Simm’s not in it. Freeman is really good as Watson though. The dynamic between him and Cumerbatch is really good.

Whoops. Too much Doctor Who.

I sometimes confuse Phil Simms and Morgan Freeman.

Oh, is that airing the new season?
Was a real big fan of the first one. Now it’s even cooler with me imagining them as the Hobbit and Smaug
If I were a billionaire...
…I would have a live troupe performing this in my living room 24 hours a day.
I maintain that there is only one acceptable ending to the Tim Tebow saga.
And that is for him to suffer a career ending injury as he dives into the endzone to win the super bowl in overtime.
Or he quits football and starts a new cult
"You are the molders of their dreams." - Clark Mollenhoff
Now that is what I call a narrowly-tailored rooting interest.
"The time has come," the Walrus said, "to talk of many things."
Whoah, that is completely true
Too bad I hate the Broncos and horseyface too much to root for that.

Just made myself uncomfortable with that one. Universe, I would like Tebow to be healthy for his whole life. My brain just did that Family Guy thing where it runs wthi a mental image against my will.
Yeah I certainly don't want him to get hurt.
But from a narrative perspective its really the only option.

Well, that’s how I see it anyway.

Tebow is great at everything you want in your QB
Except for throwing the football. He hasn’t been horrible at his job – just horrible at throwing. There is a reason they have been winning with him as their QB.
by Scruffy Lefty on Jan 8, 2012 3:04 PM PST up reply actions
Maybe.
I know FG/LL has always hated trying to quantify intangibles but Tebow checks off every single item your QB needs to do when comes to leadership. The Broncos believe they can win.
by Scruffy Lefty on Jan 8, 2012 3:12 PM PST up reply actions
I'm unconvinced that any of this is sustainable with Tebow.
I mean, I get he has the intangibles, but I think there’s a baseline of passing ability a QB needs to succeed long-term and I don’t think Tebow is ever going to be at that skill level.
Depends how much time you give him. He won't be able to run forever
but he doesn’t need to be a Rodgers/Brady type. He can get away with being a Trent Dilfer when it comes to throwing the football and still do really well during his peak years.

Well, at least for one game. And that’s the important one when talking about the Steelers.

Talking regularly to other fans
I have come to the conclusion that every team – except the huge classic franchises and the currently hot teams – feel like that the media is biased against them, and the refs. The truth is of course that national media just doesn’t have time to cover all storylines that closely, and that refs aren’t pros and thus aren’t that good.
Formerly knows as Vasilii, follow me on twitter @dolgorukii

Seattle has had some infamous jobbings by refs though.
Most teams don’t have Testaverde and XL to rally around.
Even Seattle has had great coverage when teams were good.
Early 2000s, ESPN regularly talked about the Mariners. The Sounders? The media won’t shut the fuck up about them.
Good teams get media coverage. We haven’t had a lot of good teams.
The worst thing that happened to us was Our head coach and Bill Leavy validating the outcry.
It makes sense that we are more sensitive to it. It happened in the Super Bowl and a league official apologized.
How long are we going to hang on to this?
I’m tired of the paranoia and the whining. We’re approaching a decade of this absurdity.
My dad still hangs onto the Sonics winning the NBA title.
We as fans hang on to stuff. Good or bad.

Explain how this makes anyone insecure
I think you’re the one that turns it into this “paranoia” and “conspiracy”. All teams have bad calls against them every season. Few have had it done during the Superbowl in a way that most agreed with it.
You’re sick of hearing about it. Fine. But I think you’re trying too hard to make it irrational. It’s not.
I think we all good use a little "therapy"

I can think of three games done in by bad officiating against us
Two with particularly dire consequences. The Brownie game earlier this year made me angry at the time but now it wouldn’t have mattered.
All sorts of teams get screwed by bad officiating.
Especially this year as officials are trying to cope with new, vague rules.
Look, I'm not trying to justify it or be argumentative
But I truly don’t fucking care. Having a superbowl feel like it was ripped from you sucks and I’ll never get over it.
If that makes me the whiny fan you don’t like, so be it. I don’t think that means I can’t make fun of the Steelers when they bemoan calls.
I will never forget that
Just like I’ll never forget the Sonics losing to the Nuggets or the M’s losing to the Indians during their 116 season.
Those kinds of things drive complexes.

When I head to other blogs and team sites I see the same. There’s questionable calls/bad calls all over the league. It tends to get overblown in Seattle because of SB40. Right or wrong, its part of Seattle Seahawk fandom.

I sort of agree with this
They do generally draft well. But I think they’ve let their defense age for too long without acquiring young talent and maturing it properly. I mean, their average age on defense is something crazy like 29 or 30. When guys have been playing so long, their bodies start breaking down and you get the kinds of injuries that they’ve had in this game.
They’re also going through an identity change of sorts as they transition from run-based to an aerial attack, it seems that they’ve got all their youth on one side of the ball.

"The time has come," the Walrus said, "to talk of many things."
It might have benefited the Steelers.
Brian Burke’s (Advanced NFL Stats) analysis suggests that teams play too conservatively in the late game with a tie or with a 1-2 point lead. As such, the team with a 1- or 2-point deficit has a slight statistical advantage. Slight.
Regardless of who has the ball?
I don’t believe this.
"The time has come," the Walrus said, "to talk of many things."

Here's the graph
http://www.advancednflstats.com/2008/08/win-probability.html
But my memory is faulty. If you have the ball and a 1 point lead, the probability of victory is worse than if tied only for a small window in the early part of the 4th quarter.
Gotta be noise in the data, don't you think?
"The time has come," the Walrus said, "to talk of many things."
I don't think so, no.
Certainly, one could argue about the magnitude of the difference, but if you look at the -1, 0 and +1 lines there is a pretty steady trend toward a convergence. Burke’s explanation makes sense, and it makes even more sense when one considers that the convergence happens early in the 4th quarter, when there is a psychological effect as coaches become aware that they are in the final quarter of the game.

The hell was that?
The one thing you have to prevent is a touchdown. That’s it. A field goal doesn’t end the game, just a touchdown. Why stack the box?
Four down linemen, two corners, and five linebackers.
What the what?
Ahhh...nothing goes down smoother than Steelers anguish.

I've got two computers I use at the same time, Synergy'd together.
One is my beefy gaming rig, the other a more average desktop rig that I switch to when I change the primary display over to TV. Once that second machine begins to bog down, that’s usually my cue to get another thread up and running.
Same here.
Well, technically, what I have is a standard desktop computer and a pocket calculator.
And, actually, the calculator is a pretty worn-out solar powered thing which has to be exposed to light for about 30 seconds between each use. So I just use the calculator on the computer. Unless I’m running something in non-windowed mode (like Civ), in which case I use a piece of paper and my brain, which, really, amounts to a super-powered (if erratic) computer in its own right.
Trivia, the word "computer" dates to L19.
“one who computes”.

It'll definitely go better than his last Marvel movie run
Write great dialog, director and Halle Berry fuck up the delivery.
In fairness, "Storm" had some awful, awful lines.
"The time has come," the Walrus said, "to talk of many things."
I'm trying to find the interview
but the lines you’re probably thinking of were classic Whedon lines that were completely misinterpreted by the director and actors. The Storm line in particular was a blatant case of this, where the director decided to take what was supposed to be a witty delivery and ham it up into one of the worst lines every uttered on film.
Here it is!
JW: Okay, which was also mine, and that’s the interesting thing. Everybody remembers that as the worst line ever written, but the thing about that is, it was supposed to be delivered as completely offhand. [Adopts casual, bored tone.] “You know what happens when a toad gets hit by lightning?” Then, after he gets electrocuted, “Ahhh, pretty much the same thing that happens to anything else.” But Halle Berry said it like she was Desdemona. [Strident, ringing voice.] “The same thing that happens to everything eeelse!” That’s the thing that makes you go crazy. At least “You’re a dick” got delivered right. The worst thing about these things is that, when the actors say it wrong, it makes the writer look stupid. People assume that the line… I listened to half the dialogue in Alien 4, and I’m like, “That’s idiotic,” because of the way it was said. And nobody knows that. Nobody ever gets that. They say, “That was a stupid script,” which is the worst pain in the world.
Interesting. I could see how that would really rankle a writer.
That was indeed the line I was thinking of, didn’t realize it was so broadly reviled.
"The time has come," the Walrus said, "to talk of many things."
Yeah....this is pretty interesting, because Berry did emphasize 'toad' a tad too much

The whole thing was botched.
It was supposed to be this casual, offhand line. Instead it was an over-the-top, hammy delivery that was utterly cringe worthy.
Plus she is a shit actress.
Easy on los ojos, though. Very easy.
"The time has come," the Walrus said, "to talk of many things."
Yeah, if it would have been delivered as he intended, it would have been such a classic Whedon line.
Same stuff that he’s generally applauded for.
