I’m not saying it’s going to happen, but the plucky underdog nobody thinks will win can surprise. I think they have a better shot than we did with the Saints.

"You are the molders of their dreams." - Clark Mollenhoff

by EequalsMc2 on Jan 8, 2012 1:51 PM PST up reply actions

Moffatt is doing a lot better with Sherlock than he is since he took over Dr Who

Cumberbatch is AMAZING. Carries the series, with all its clever writing and snappy dialogs, his performance is really what you check in for. Well, and McGuigan has a lot of fun with weird editing/directing.

Simm? Simm’s not in it. Freeman is really good as Watson though. The dynamic between him and Cumerbatch is really good.

Well, that’s how I see it anyway.

by B0w1-of-R1ce on Jan 8, 2012 2:59 PM PST up reply actions

Tebow is great at everything you want in your QB

Except for throwing the football. He hasn’t been horrible at his job – just horrible at throwing. There is a reason they have been winning with him as their QB.

by Scruffy Lefty on Jan 8, 2012 3:04 PM PST up reply actions

Maybe.

I know FG/LL has always hated trying to quantify intangibles but Tebow checks off every single item your QB needs to do when comes to leadership. The Broncos believe they can win.

by Scruffy Lefty on Jan 8, 2012 3:12 PM PST up reply actions

I'm unconvinced that any of this is sustainable with Tebow.

I mean, I get he has the intangibles, but I think there’s a baseline of passing ability a QB needs to succeed long-term and I don’t think Tebow is ever going to be at that skill level.

by BrianL on Jan 8, 2012 3:14 PM PST up reply actions

Depends how much time you give him. He won't be able to run forever

but he doesn’t need to be a Rodgers/Brady type. He can get away with being a Trent Dilfer when it comes to throwing the football and still do really well during his peak years.

Talking regularly to other fans

I have come to the conclusion that every team – except the huge classic franchises and the currently hot teams – feel like that the media is biased against them, and the refs. The truth is of course that national media just doesn’t have time to cover all storylines that closely, and that refs aren’t pros and thus aren’t that good.

Seattle has had some infamous jobbings by refs though.

I think you’re the one that turns it into this “paranoia” and “conspiracy”. All teams have bad calls against them every season. Few have had it done during the Superbowl in a way that most agreed with it.

But I truly don’t fucking care. Having a superbowl feel like it was ripped from you sucks and I’ll never get over it.

It's true though.

They’ve got a couple key pieces they’ll need to replace soon, like Polamalu and Harrison maybe, but they’ve got quite a bit of young talent already.

by Nate Dogg on Jan 8, 2012 3:22 PM PST up reply actions

I sort of agree with this

They do generally draft well. But I think they’ve let their defense age for too long without acquiring young talent and maturing it properly. I mean, their average age on defense is something crazy like 29 or 30. When guys have been playing so long, their bodies start breaking down and you get the kinds of injuries that they’ve had in this game.

They’re also going through an identity change of sorts as they transition from run-based to an aerial attack, it seems that they’ve got all their youth on one side of the ball.

Fine line between sexism and critisism.

Here's the graph

http://www.advancednflstats.com/2008/08/win-probability.html

But my memory is faulty. If you have the ball and a 1 point lead, the probability of victory is worse than if tied only for a small window in the early part of the 4th quarter.

"The time has come," the Walrus said, "to talk of many things."

by shams on Jan 8, 2012 5:12 PM PST up reply actions

I don't think so, no.

Certainly, one could argue about the magnitude of the difference, but if you look at the -1, 0 and +1 lines there is a pretty steady trend toward a convergence. Burke’s explanation makes sense, and it makes even more sense when one considers that the convergence happens early in the 4th quarter, when there is a psychological effect as coaches become aware that they are in the final quarter of the game.

Same here.

Well, technically, what I have is a standard desktop computer and a pocket calculator.

And, actually, the calculator is a pretty worn-out solar powered thing which has to be exposed to light for about 30 seconds between each use. So I just use the calculator on the computer. Unless I’m running something in non-windowed mode (like Civ), in which case I use a piece of paper and my brain, which, really, amounts to a super-powered (if erratic) computer in its own right.

It doesn’t look like an NFL playcall. I want to hear some analysis out there this week, this – to me -is much more interesting than just bruhahaing about Tebow’s personality.

Ooh Joss thread?

What do you guys think about him directing The Avengers? Will he pull it off?

by the other side on Jan 8, 2012 5:43 PM PST up reply actions

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEE YAYYAYAYAYAYAYAYAY

That’s what I think about Joss running The Avengers.

After Astonishing X-Men, Marvel should give him a blank contract to do whatever the fuck he wants.

by BrianL on Jan 8, 2012 5:44 PM PST up reply actions

I agree completely.

I hope he maintains as much control as possible, which shouldn’t be hard with him writing AND directing it.

It'll definitely go better than his last Marvel movie run

Write great dialog, director and Halle Berry fuck up the delivery.

by BrianL on Jan 8, 2012 5:54 PM PST up reply actions

In fairness, "Storm" had some awful, awful lines.

"The time has come," the Walrus said, "to talk of many things."

by shams on Jan 8, 2012 5:54 PM PST up reply actions

I'm trying to find the interview

but the lines you’re probably thinking of were classic Whedon lines that were completely misinterpreted by the director and actors. The Storm line in particular was a blatant case of this, where the director decided to take what was supposed to be a witty delivery and ham it up into one of the worst lines every uttered on film.

by BrianL on Jan 8, 2012 6:07 PM PST up reply actions

Here it is!

Link

JW: Okay, which was also mine, and that’s the interesting thing. Everybody remembers that as the worst line ever written, but the thing about that is, it was supposed to be delivered as completely offhand. [Adopts casual, bored tone.] “You know what happens when a toad gets hit by lightning?” Then, after he gets electrocuted, “Ahhh, pretty much the same thing that happens to anything else.” But Halle Berry said it like she was Desdemona. [Strident, ringing voice.] “The same thing that happens to everything eeelse!” That’s the thing that makes you go crazy. At least “You’re a dick” got delivered right. The worst thing about these things is that, when the actors say it wrong, it makes the writer look stupid. People assume that the line… I listened to half the dialogue in Alien 4, and I’m like, “That’s idiotic,” because of the way it was said. And nobody knows that. Nobody ever gets that. They say, “That was a stupid script,” which is the worst pain in the world.

by BrianL on Jan 8, 2012 6:10 PM PST up reply actions

Interesting. I could see how that would really rankle a writer.

That was indeed the line I was thinking of, didn’t realize it was so broadly reviled.

"The time has come," the Walrus said, "to talk of many things."

Yeah....this is pretty interesting, because Berry did emphasize 'toad' a tad too much

The whole thing was botched.

It was supposed to be this casual, offhand line. Instead it was an over-the-top, hammy delivery that was utterly cringe worthy.
