A Fireside Chat With Benne and Whiskey
This is a new experiment for us. You guys all know whiskey_chainsaw as the asshole who only posts about fantasy football, and you only know me as the asshole who bans other people for being assholes. Well today, we combined forces on Facebook, and decided to copy our entire chat spiels and post them on this blog.
I hope you enjoy them, partly because they're entertaining insights into the FG writers with less inhibitions, partly because whiskey_chainsaw and I can launch into epic rants at the slightest provocation, but mostly because you see our real names and pictures in the transcript.
If people like it, Tyler and I will make this a regular thing.

So is the Steelers getting Tebowed the greatest moment of the NFL season?
-
-
-
oh man...
-
i really did jump up and down screaming/cheering like i haven't since beast mode... so YES.
-
undoubtedly, yes
-
you know me, i'm the biggest bronco hater in the PNW, and even i loved it!
-
-
-
hahahhaahahahha!
-
so very true
-
-
-
Like, dear God is he a terrible QB, but they keep pulling these epic wins out of their asses so much I may have to start going back to church.
-
It's so disarming.
-
-
-
i have von miller AND elvis dumerville on my fantasy team. jesus i wish we had a pass rushing combo like that. they're the best tandem in the league when healthy
-
-
-
I LOVE Von Doom and Dume.
-
And yes, we need a serious pass rush from someone not named Clemons.
-
It's one of my biggest offseason check points, behind "find a legitimate QB to challenge TJax"
-
-
-
i think i'm in the flynn group.
-
pisses me off, because i really want a "cannon armed" type, but i think he'll do "enough" and we can draft around him
-
i do want to draft the big arizona st guy in the 3rd if he lasts that long though
-
and a OLB pass rusher in the first...
-
and as long as we're in wish list mode, chris polk to back up beast mode teh next 5 years, in the 2nd
-
-
-
Thomas on Field Gulls wrote the most balanced, clear-headed and mature articles on Flynn we'll see all summer.
-
And I still want him.
-
-
-
i know. i can barely read his stuff though... it's like being back in college, just so dry.
-
i think he's a "he is what he is" type, but a little better than some of the others like that, lol
-
but yeah, i read those ON MY PHONE they were so good
-
-
-
Hurm, can't say I agree with you on his writing style.
-
I like him because he comes from an academic perspective in his analysis.
-
-
-
no, that's what i mean... dry as in analytical
-
valueable but not as fun to read
-
-
-
absolutely
-
there isn't enough "balance" on, for example, tavaris. even those of us who are "okay" with him aren't enamored
-
the haters don't realize that...
-
-
-
Oh, TJax.
-
-
-
they just want the hate, without a rational assessment of how to fix it
-
-
-
Here's my question about him: WHY THE FUCK ARE PEOPLE FEIGNING SURPRISE/OUTRAGE AT HIS PERFORMANCE?
-
YES I'M SAYING THIS IN ALL CAPS
-
HE'S EXACTLY THE SAME INCONSISTENT QB HE WAS IN MIN. HE'S PLAYING EXACTLY TO EXPECTATIONS.
-
-
-
i think he's a SMIDGE better, actually. not much, but A SMIDGE BETTER DAMMIT!!! hahah
-
-
-
HE WAS ONLY BROUGHT IN BECAUSE THE LOCKOUT FUCKED EVERY TEAM AND HE KINDA KNEW BEVELL'S OFFENSE SO HEY THERE'S OUR STOPGAP FOR 11/12.
-
-
-
agreed, exactly
-
real question-- do you think portis is worth a roster spot/potential hope after THIS year?
-
-
-
He strikes me as practice squad fodder and I think people only clamored for him because he "wasn't TJax or Charlie."
-
the backup QB is still the most popular athlete in town even if he's a 3rd stringer who was inactive all season.
-
-
-
very true
-
but i think some people will always clamor for the 3rd stringer to move up even if he first two play well
-
same reason people bet on underdogs and risky stocks instead of cd's and sure things
-
-
-
Eh...IO'
-
-
-
because if it DOES turn out, boy is that sweet!
-
-
-
Eh...I'd call that the Tom Brady Effect in action.
-
-
-
should honestly be "the Romo effect" but people hate him needlessly while forgetting he, and not brady, is the true poster boy for UDFA QB based on athletic ability who has made something of himself"
-
-
-
Everybody points to Brady as the Unhidden Gem Defying Everyone, ignoring the fact that his draft position was more of an indictment of the scouting process.
-
He played at Michigan, it's not like he wallowed in obscurity. I just think that everybody whiffed on his potential.
-
-
-
what's more, coming out of school TODAY he'd be much higher than the guys that are goign in the late 1st, early 2nd, etc.
-
Keapernick?" NO WAY he goes before Brady
-
(or however you spell his name)
-
-
-
Right. A fucking TCU QB went in the 2nd round. The draft game has changed so much it's asinine to compare with drafts from a decade ago.
-
-
-
exactly
-
Brady going in the 6th then is as relevant as Mirer and MacGuire are to Seattle using a 1st rounder on a QB
-
-
-
Which still doesn't explain why Seattle fans are so hesitant to draft another franchise QB. Show me on the doll where Rick Mirer touched you, Twelves.
-
Oh, we just typed over each other's thoughts.
-
-
-
Wow. Yes indeed. AWESOME. HAHA!
-
I have an idea for us-- we should do (and maybe add others in) a series of "conversations" that are pre-edited as a post, so like thread commentary but better thought out and more dialogue-ish.
-
maybe point/counterpoint it. something like that.
-
-
-
-
There's a huge "NOW NOW NOW" mentality to "fixing things" that just doesn't work in real life. You made a great point about Tavaris being brought in simply because of the lack of camps and knowing the offense. That's just smart. It's making the most of a bad hand. But just because you get to reshuffle the deck next season doesn't mean you're gonna have great hole cards.
-
-
-
Meaning, QB isn't "easy to fix" and there isn't ONE ANSWER. the answer is to keep looking, and make the best of what you have... be it (god forbid but I'll tolerate it) another year of tavaris... or flynn... or... whomever.
-
-
-
"NOW NOW NOW" is, unfortunately, a big part of sports fandom. Welcome to the Internet and its massive entitlement complex.
-
-
-
play the cards your dealt.
-
-
-
But I still want Matt Flynn.
-
-
-
Yeah, because we DIDN'T have that pre internet?! Hah! Sports Radio might be the better reference point for the "entitlement complex"
-
-
-
From what I've heard, sports radio calls are dominated by trolls more than genuine idiots. Take that for what you will.
-
-
-
the two together are a giant cauldron of "RESULTS IMMEDIATE" ... filled with a dash of hope, a splash of past success, and a gallon of unreasonable expectation
-
and any good cook knows you can't hurry perfection... but we seem to think that you can hurry the perfect answer to the most difficult position in professional team sports.
-
-
-
But! You're missing the important factor that turns "instant gratification" up to 11 on the Internet: they can send their message instantly.
-
-
-
so true, they don't have to wait for the radio host, don't have to get through the busy signals, and don't have to take 5 minutes of down time to think about what they're going to say before they put their words in public
-
hahah
-
so very true, benne!
-
-
-
This turned sports fandom into a bizarre Lovecraftian horror of entitlement.
-
-
-
I need a lovecraft to entitle!
-
-
-
You know why the Philly media was actually talking about firing Andy Reid as if it was a good thing? Because the toxic, self-loathing Philly fanbase whipped out the power of the Internet to push this stupid meme and make it something that people actually had to talk about.
-
-
-
well, they saved the season late... i say two less wins and i agree. not because it is deserved absolutely, but because he did, after all, take an OL coach and make him D Coordinator, and that guy then shifted D to a zone based coverage after paying the finest man-to-man cover guy a boatload of cash.
-
-
-
so, Andy survives barely, but you HAVE to question the coaching staff.
-
not unlike Sark/Holt actually...
-
-
-
I just miss Jim Johnson's fun blitz schemes

-
-
-
hahah
-
-
-
So glad Holt is gone.
-
I had all the patience in the world for him, given the shit talent from Ty, but one of the worst defenses in Husky history, 3 years into his reign, was absolutely unacceptable.
-
-
-
LOVE the hire. Oregon guys. I'm gonna buy into the "if you can't beat them, join them" aspect. speaking of which in a vague NFL way... does getting Joshy Boy back help NE vs. Denver knowing the personnel from an insider's perspective?!?
-
-
-
Has he proven anything, beyond being a Bellichik lapdog?
-
It's hilarious how much the Bellichik Coaching Tree imploded. He loses Charlie Weis and Romeo Crennel in the mid-00's, the media proclaims he's nothing without his assistants. His assistants do nothing with their new teams while the Pats turn into a Madden superpower.
-
-
-
uhm, that wasn't my point... hahhah! I heard someone say that Belichick planted a sleeper cell in the NFL by having Joshy implode first Denver and then StL's offenses. HAHAH!
-
-
-
So after destroying Denver (and them only succeeding because Tebow has NO RELIGION ALLOWED) and coaching Sam Bradford to a stunning regression that makes the team re-evaluate their investment in him, he gets to go back to the team that made him a star.
-
I love NFL nepotism.
-
-
-
-
Thank you for this chat tonight, Tyler. One more question before we go: are Earl Thomas and Kam Chancellor the best safety duo in the league right now, or do they need another year of polishing before we can safely say that?
-
-
-
I'm debating
-
hold on...
-
-
-
The popular argument outside Seattle would not include them. Here, we are on to something special and we know they are. One key attribute to great safety play is playing well together. These two compliment each other well, and Kam being much better in coverage than anticipated has only added to that.
-
That being said, I think you still have to give a nod to Pittsburgh with Polamalu and Ryan Clark. Not because I'm in love with Troy P like many.
-
God forbid, he drives me nuts. But, Troy has free reign to do as he pleases, and that's part of the reason they got Tebowed. I think the final play happened because Ryan Clark wasn't playing to provide the Yang to TroyP's Yin.
-
We have TWO guys who have the ability to flex and feel and react off of both the O and each other, and regardless of it they are currently the best in the league, they will be shortly.
-
-
-
I would like to note that ET's coverage skills have massively improved this year, which is why his INT numbers went down. Having him as the All-Purpose Safety, with Kam as the designated enforcer, make the Seahawks' secondary one of the more feared units in 2012.
-
Thanks for the chat, whiskey.
-
We should do this again soon.
-
-
-
Agreed completely. And it was a pleasure. Let's do it soon.

Please more whiskey next time, and more bitching about Thomas
This was…. interesting.
I absolutely wasn't bitching...
He’s great. But his writing is so technical, it isn’t “fun” it literally feels like class is in session and i’m an underclassman once again… So it is harder to follow… But in a good way! :)

I think ET played better than Polamalu this year
But Clark is better than Kam. So it’s a wash.
Read my tweets or whatever - @SSReporters
I'm proud that we're coherent and the spelling wasn't terrible.
It wasn’t planned, just happened organically. I was almost afraid to read over and see what I said, but I like it. Nice work Benne. The facebook format is very cool if you can… “beautify it.”

Seeing the title at first I thought these were going to be drunken ramblings by Benne.

In that regard, I are disappoint but good content nonetheless!

We're putting you on the "I are".
Rest up for August!

Who said they aren't!
Glad someone bought on the title, it was just too tempting not to play around with that concept.

Hah now we know your real name!
If you change your FG name though I’m gonna hunt you own silly.

Feel free to add me on fb if you wish.
I’m a facebook fan. I have some great friendships that have developed through it, I’ve been hired because of a fb acquaintance, and I found my stepdad a job as well.
So yeah, I can see why some are not, but I AM a fan of social media.

Hahah!
That’s funny. I had a whole English class in college on grammar trees and breaking down sentences in which we would play with those types of misconceptions.

Neat.
I enjoyed that format, good content that covers all kinds of area’s. Thanks for sharing, I for one would love to see more posts in that format!
It would be odd if you gentlemen suddenly got craploads of friend requests.

I wrote the above pro-fb comment prior to reading this.
Which makes both comments cooler, really.

I hope you aren't mad!
It was unfiltered, and I wrote that prior to knowing it was potentially going public. I actually thought it was a good thing the way it came out. A compliment toward the way you analyze. I absolutely could not do what you do, it takes too much discipline and technical understanding.

I guess I will be the guy that says "I don't think this works" but I don't want you guys to take that the wrong way.
It’s like a transcript of a short podcast. It’s one of those things that is an idea that rarely works, like a horror movie remake. If I were you guys I might want to take the idea and then take it to the next level and then when you get to that level, ask yourself what the next level is and then try to do that. An actual podcast? Or the next level might actually be taking a day and filming yourself sitting next to an actual fire with a bearskin rug and doing it again. I just had a hard time following along with the chat, as it bounced around to so many different topics.
I hope that my criticisms have been constructive, otherwise, I’ve just been a dick. I’m not trying to be a dick, I like you guys. I’d just think of more ways to take the same idea but extrapolate it into something that’s more entertaining.

And I say this in a public forum only so there can be a consensus. Maybe I'm wrong.

I wanted to do revisions and editing, Benne wanted it unfiltered.
I think there are benefits to both paths. I like the criticism, and have absolutely no problem with it!

I'm with Kenneth here.
This reads like two dudes bullshitting at a bar, which is fine. And I’d be interested if those two dudes were the Q/PM, but it’s a couple regulars on FG.
Honestly, it looks like a comment thread taken off of a random fanpost and made into a front page article.
What did strike me however, is that I’ve never seen whiskey so concise and to the point. 2, 3 sentence replies? Unheard of man!
70% of space is covered by dark matter, the rest by ET.
That's the benefit of facebook chat I guess.
More concise. Who would have thought? Hah!
Honestly though, we’ve had some dialogues in the past that have left me in pure stitches. I think we can do it “better” but still do it and be worthwhile to the reader.
I’m not saying it will be the most epic thing around, but I do think there can be room for it, particularly in the offseason.

Continue it
I enjoyed it even though the internet and real life have now melded.

They absolutely have.
Unlike several of the authors here that hail from Bellingham, Benne and I have never actually met in real life… yet I consider him, Danny, Jacson, Scruffy and several other “FB friends I’ve met through FG” to be a random and pleasant intrusion on my “real life.”

I play on Xbox live with a group of people I met almost 10 years ago and I know more about them than I do my neighbors . It’s really surreal or sad…probably sad.

I enjoyed it well enough, but have to admit to doing some skimming from time to time.
It’s a fine format for the offseason, I think. Maybe it needs a 3rd voice to moderate the conversation?
Interesting idea.
We’ve played around with a few thoughts… thanks for the input.
And that goes for everyone. Thanks for the input. Expect more “fun” posts like this as the offseason progresses. Personally, I come here for the community and the fun of being a Seahawk fan as well as the great clinical breakdowns.
