I'm not going to write about why i love or hate Russell Wilson as the Seahawks starting quarterback this year. I'm not really going to analyze numbers or try to convince anyone that he is better or worse than they think. I just want to make a reflection on the up and down reactions and opinions of Russell Wilson by people on this site.
I loved the Russell Wilson draft pick and loved watching him in the preseason. I think the first few weeks made me truly understand the difference between preseason and regular season. Russell Wilson has struggled this season, and he has excelled this season and all the while people on this site have been reacting on a week to week basis. That's only natural, I do it too. But it really irks me when the shift is so dramatic week to week and people throw out claims and insults to not only Russell Wilson and Pete Carroll but also to other Seahawks fans. A lot of them are reactions right after a game when people might not be thinking so clearly, but emotions from a football game shouldn't completely throw all logic and thought out the window (unless you're ESPN and Packer fans). So when I see comments about how we lost because of our "midget QB" and how Flynn should be starting because the "midget experiment" is failing, then someone just outright says "Fuck you Wilson" I get very frustrated. I have criticized Mr. Wilson this year but I've also seen the amazing potential he brings to the team. I always try to stay neutral and evaluate him based on his performance without bias, but I am biased. I love Russell Wilson and really want him to be great, but I too feel the up and down emotions after a win or loss.
The extreme shifts in emotion week to week also apply to the team as a whole. One week it's "wow the team is coming together they have a shot to win the division! Isn't Wilson great?" then the next week it's "Pete has no idea what he is doing! this rebuild clearly is failing and a midget can't be successful!!" Don't even get me started about people talking about passes batted down. I guess what I'm trying to say through all this ranting is that some people NEED TO SLOW THE FUCK DOWN. Russell Wilson is a rookie. He does rookie things. He struggles. Receivers drop passes. Lineman commit penalties. But the defense also gives us a chance to win every game. 7 points is the largest margin of defeat this season. Wilson has led 2 game winning drives this season. Marshawn Lynch is from another planet. It isn't like this is an old team with one more year to try to get a superbowl. This is a team we will get to know for hopefully many years. So try, just try to evaluate Russell Wilson and this team without so much emotion and either hatred or love. Completely ignoring Wilson's faults is just foolish. Height is a factor no matter how much we deny it. But it doesn't mean he can't be successful. He's played 7 games. And being a 3rd round pick, I'd say he's had a pretty good first half for a rookie. The division is tough, no one is gonna run away with it. The Seahawks are 4-3. Clearly they need to improve. But stop with the ignorant arguments against or for Russell Wilson.
This is a growing team with room to grow and that excites me. 4-3 with a couple of bounces away from 7-0 excites me. Attacking other Hawks fans for supporting or criticizing a player does not excite me. Lets all be Hawk fans and celebrate when they win and grieve when they lose. Keep up the great writing on this blog and the great community it has. We don't need to ruin it with ignorance and vitriol.
