Tats Comeback Attempt?
I know this was posted on PFT, but I did see this on another site. PlansComeback

I feel the guy does have a decent shot at helping a team with a good front four become more effective in lining up and such. I would't count the guy out, he's a pure warrior on the field. Not exactly the most physical or fastest guy around, but still a player if he's healthy. He'll help someone out. It won't be in Seattle, though.

Why get Matt Flynn?

No thanks
Maybe if he comes back as a coach. We really need to upgrade the speed at MLB, as shifty east-west backs tore us up towards the end of the year. Heater on his gimpy knee was probably still faster than Lofa at his healthiest.
Wow That's Like Comparing
A sloth and a turtle. I see what you did there.

Here's the original article:
According to a source close to the situation, a knee injury was the reason he sat out the 2011-12 season.
"It was just injury-related," the source said. "He wasn’t 100 percent and didn’t feel he was ready to go."
Eyeing an NFL return in 2012, the middle linebacker spent the year rehabbing, working out and spending time with his family, which includes his infant son.
Typical recovery for arthroscopic knee surgery — rather than reconstruction for a torn ligament — takes weeks or maybe a couple of months but not an entire season. Tatupu’s arthroscopy, which may have involved both knees, was reported to have taken place during last January.
Tatupu may have been a victim of the NFL lockout when players could not rehabilitate under the guidance of team trainers and doctors.
"(A full offseason) probably would’ve helped his recovery significantly," the insider said.

Thanks For that
I didn’t want to link up to NFP but it does explain it well in a nutshell.

Why wouldn't you want to link to NFP?
They’re the only guys that did any original reporting on the subject. Rotoworld just reposts a short (sometimes wrong) synopsis.

Good Point
I probably should have posted that one. Was trying to avoid triggering my filter here at work.

They report it was only arthroscopy
but i vaguely recall it was microfracture surgery. I have tried to find a source but cannot.
Smashmouth is the new sexy!
Arthroscopy just means that they used an arthroscope in the surgery
Microfracture is always performed via arthroscopy so “arthroscopic knee surgery” could very easily include microfracture to promote repair and healing in addition to “scoping” the knee (meaning a traditional cleanout).
The implication in the referenced article is that recovery is only weeks or months
from his arthroscopy (as opposed to longer for ligament reconstruction). But if he had microfracture, the recovery period would be a minimum of 6 months and maybe over a year based on what we have seen from other athletes across professional sports (Oden, Amare, Big Walt and I am sure there are others). I guess I didn’t make it clear that the timeline of recovery was what I was questioning in regards to microfracture vs just a simple arthroscopy for clean out and meniscal repair.

Ah, I see what you're saying.
Especially the Amare case – I think he only went 6 months or so before trying to return, but ultimately couldn’t finish out the season – would seem to indicate that the report was right about the nature of his surgery.
I'll just as soon imagine us with Cortez Kennedy.
Fantasy.

Even if he does play in '12
I think the odds on any mutual interest are rather long.
