The new Field Turf surface has been installed at Century Link and not a moment too soon. The old turf wouldn't have been able to withstand the three teams playing on it this year.

Does anybody know what kind of field turf this is?
Will it save our guys knees and ankles?
I get why people are changing to their real names, but most people know me as STUFR. In fact, if you called me by my given name at work, you would just confuse most people there. So I comfortably say yes, my name is STUFR.
Revolution system, latest and greatest from Field Turf.
The answer to the latter question is hopefully yes. At the very least, it should help that it isn’t beaten flat like the old surface.
This is how the new turf was described in a release sent out by the Sounders:
"The FieldTurf Revolution system is built with the Revolution fiber and is the result of innovative science, engineering and technology that will provide a playing surface that features a soft and strong monofilament fiber. A proprietary fiber polymer formulation resists splitting and degradation and includes an industry leading ultraviolet inhibitor technology. A state-of-the-art extrusion process provides intricate concave and ridged construction to eliminate breaking points in each fiber blade.
“Specially sized cryogenic rubber particles and washed silica sand granules are layered, in a patented installation process, surrounding the Revolution fibers. This provides player safety and outstanding durability and longevity. The FieldTurf system is the only turf product in the world with independent long-term and real-life safety data backing up its claims.”

I don't get it, personally
what are they, frozen on the field or something?

They freeze the rubber before grinding it
Results in a smoother pellet that is beneficial for a variety of boring reasons.

Does that mean the bathrooms are going to have three sea shells?
and how do they work?

Now that's a good shot.
I can’t say much of how it’ll help from an injury perspective (odds are, it’ll help somehow but I have no idea to what extent).
For soccer though, that looks like it should play a bit more true to natural grass. I’ve stood on the old turf a few times, this definitely has a much better look to it.
This stuff looks fuzzy

Newer artificial surfaces
are using uneven “grass” blade length in order for a ball to travel more truly across the surface.

I want to do one billion corner kicks from this exact spot.
On a 60 degree afternoon in May.

Thanks for sharing the shot Danny
The in-fill still needs to settle. Which won’t mean a thing for the Seahawks.

If it's anything like the new turf at Arena Sports
It’ll be a massive improvement. The new stuff has so much more cushion. It’s far nicer to run on.
And for Okung to block on...hopefully

Okung does just fine blocking.
Here’s hoping the new surface makes it less damaging when jerks decide to judo-flip him.

I think there was this one time where he was blocking and just kneeled down onto one knee
and there went his ankle…again…

The old stuff had a weird shine to it
It seems like there are two different types of field turf. The stuff in Baltimore is really short and looks a little more like astroturf. It’s really clean. Nice looking. Then there’s the stuff in the Metrodome, the Superdome, and Tropicana that looks brutal. The Hawks have always had this stuff. Here’s hoping the new turf looks better.
I really don't care how it looks so long as it does two things
A) Reduce injuries
B) Better emulate how a soccer ball behaves on real grass.
Is that Leroy Hill there? Picking @ the new 'Grass' turf
too soon……?

There are worse fates than playing at the CLink while we get a brand new Husky Stadium.
by Benne on Feb 27, 2012 8:49 PM PST up reply actions 1 recs
Totally.
And those fates are known as “The Tacoma Dome”.
But seriously, I think the atmosphere there for Husky games could get pretty electric. Just a bummer for the UW kids that they can’t walk to the game.
My Ferndale high school played for the state title at the Tacoma Dome.
How dare you insult the great field and lively atmosph—-fuck it, that dome sucks.
I watched them beat Kennedy that year in the semifinals, also in the Tacoma Dome.
