Seahawks release WR Ben Obomanu

Otto Greule Jr

According to his own twitter account, the Seahawks have told wide receiver Ben Obomanu that he'll be released. The former 7th round pick out of Auburn has been with the team for seven seasons and was one of the few remaining hold-outs from the previous regime. He stuck with the team through fundamental route running, strong hands, and outstanding special teams work, but his 2013 $2.466M cap hit made him a numbers casualty. His release frees up $2.3M in cap space, something the Hawks will need now that they've signed Percy Harvin, Cliff Avril, and Michael Bennett in the past couple of days.

Obomanu's best years with the Hawks were in 2010 and 2011 - he caught 30 passes for 494 yards and 4 TD in the former and 37/436 and 2 TD in the latter. In 2012, in limited action, he caught 4 passes for 36 yards before going to the injured reserve.

Obomanu, 29, has 87 catches for 1,209 yards in his career and at 6'1, 204 can play outside or in the slot. His versatility as a receiver and special teams contributor shouldn't be overlooked, and it wouldn't surprise me awfully to see him end up in Jacksonville or New York. Best of luck to you, Obo!
