Seahawks release Charly Martin, claim LS Kyle Nelson

Jason Bridge-USA TODAY Sports

Seattle has released veteran wide receiver Charly Martin and claimed longsnapper Kyle Nelson, recently waived by San Francisco. Nelson was with the Chargers last season and snapped in six games; he was released in May and the Niners picked him up, but subsequently dropped him on Wednesday.

Nelson is actually the second longsnapper that the Seahawks have claimed on waivers this offseason as they look for competition for Clint Gresham at that position. Seattle previously claimed LS Adam Steiner off of waivers from the Raiders on May 15th, but he was released after less than a week.

Gresham has been nails in his long-snapping duties over the past few years, and the rapport he has with both P Jon Ryan and (likely) K Steven Hauschka is valuable - but he recently signed a $1.323M tender - a relatively steep number for a player at that position. I said this exact same thing with Steiner, but: The Seahawks may look for cap savings if Nelson proves consistent and capable at that spot.

Martin was one of 14 receivers on the Seahawks 90-man roster. It wouldn't surprise me if they re-sign him before camp, though.
