2014 Starting Right Cornerback

Obviously we all know and are frustrated with the entire Walter Thurmond and Brandon Browner situation and there have been many comments on both of them missing out on a huge free agency pay day next year. This might allow the Hawks to resign WTIII for considerably less next year to keep him. Browner on the other hand, still has not been officially suspended. With the weird rules surrounding his situation, I think it is likely that his reported 1 year suspension will get reduced to 4 games since he missed the tests while he was in the CFL. So potentailly if that's the case, there's a chance that he might get resigned for cheap next year as well.

For this post I'm assuming that Browner will not be with the Seahawks after this year and the Hawks make a push to resign WTIII. Even though I think Thurm is very talented, I think he is best suited for the inside as the nickelback and provides the team the most benefits there. I don't think he is the answer for starting outside due to his injury history and his lack of size/speed. He excels the most with lateral movements inside. Therefore we need to find a replacement for Browner's position.

Even though Byron Maxwell and Jeremy Lane have both shown they are capable of handling the outside, I don't think that they are the next long term answer at the right corner position. Maxwell is a bit longer CB and definitely has a mean, physical side to him, but I think he has a bit of an issue with his hand work and his hips are a bit stiff. Lane is faster and has more fluid hips, but obviously doesn't have the size that Pete wants at the CB position. No disrespect to these two, as they have done a great job at stepping in when called upon every time.

Perrish Cox is only going to last for 4 weeks* . DeShawn Shead has shown promise on the practice squad but I think he's more suited to replace Maragos next year than any of the corners as he has more upside and Maragos has limited potential. Now this is where the wildcard comes in, Tharold Simon. After not playing in the preseason or practicing all year due to a foot fracture, he has been on the PUP list and nobody knows what he looks like at the NFL level. However, he is due to start practicing this week.

* Update...Perrish Cox will only last 1 day! Turns out he doesn't know anything about the Niners that Pete doesn't already know.

I really doubt that he will be making any type of on field contribution to the team this year, but next year I think he will be in the mix to win the starting job as Browner's replacement. From what I've seen, he is very athletic, has decent speed, is physical and is very much built like Sherm. One thing against him is that coming into rookie camp, he was a bit out of shape. I'm sure that being around the LOB will help him pick up a good work ethic off the field, studying tape, etc.
