Harvin to IR rumors. Why now?

So there alot of rumors flying this Xmas eve that the Seahawks will place Percy Harvin on season ending IR....to make room on the roster for Walter Thurmond post suspension. I find this rumor odd and intriguing, and potentially very disappointing.

It seems Pete Carroll indicated that PH could be placed on IR when asked by a reporter. Now alot of people are speculating that he will be. I can understand why. Pete, ever the optimist, has sun shining out of his ass 99% of the time. So for him to drop a downer like that, after a downer game like the Arizona home loss, gives it extra weight.

But my question is: why now? We've been repeatedly told that Harvin did not re-injure the hip in the Minnesota game. He's just dealing with some pain, a minor setback. But he's gone from day-to-day to week-to-week. The hip is obviously not responding as the team's doctors had hoped. At the same time, nothing has been said about required surgery, a broken bone, or anything else that typically sends a guy to IR. Pain. Inflammation. But there's still up-to 6 weeks in this football season. What aren't we being told?

I can't believe that the two or three guys at the bottom of the 53 man roster are so valuable to this team's depth in the playoffs that they're worth protecting over the (admittedly ever diminishing) chance that Harvin will heal up enough to suit up in a key playoff game and/or Superbowl. I'm talking Perrish Cox, Bryan Walters, Caylin Hauptmann, et al. Percy Harvin: the explosive playmaker, salary cap albatross, 1st round draft pick of the 2013 Seattle Seahawks vs a handful of guys that have Etric Pruitt written all over them. Basically, we've waited this long for Harvin, why not keep a roster spot free for him, even if just to get on the field for a handful of plays in a key game.

Conspiracy theory: this is sabre rattling by Pete Carroll. Maybe at this point, Harvin is getting a little flaky and delicate and unwilling to play through his pain while the team is getting impatient and frustrated. Maybe Carroll is subtlely threatening that they're willing to write him off this year to light a fire under Harvin's ass and get him to committ to playing through pain sooner....a complicated dynamic involving a possible Superbowl that Harvin would love to play in for a team he didn't help reach there (beyond a circus catch for a first down and sublime kick return in a game the team would have won without him).

Tea leaf reading: Harvin hasn't posted anything to twitter in a month after providing regular optimistic updates previously. Why has he clammed up? Is he depressed about a major physical setback? Or has he just gone weird and uncommunicative because he's emotionally delicate and generally enigmatic?

The elephant in the room: Percy Harvin is precisely the one type of player this team might need to get over the hump -- a swiss army knife offensive playmaker to compliment the brute force of Beast Mode and a receiver corp that could be considered a great supporting cast if playing behind a real leading man.

Oh Percy Percy, wherefore art thou Percy?
