Carroll's boneheaded timeout strategy...

The end of the 49ers game was the latest in a long line of Carroll's boneheaded end of half/end of game timeout strategy failures. Unfortunately, at this point in his career, we just have to accept that this is a part of who he is, and there will always be the risk of this happening in any close game. It has been that way throughout his career. So what did he do wrong today? Using up his time-outs starting with over three minutes left in the game and - critically - WHILE SF COULD STILL GET ANOTHER FIRST DOWN - was a terrible decision. You NEVER do that. This is Football 101. He should have let that series play out, and if SF got a first down, THEN start to use his time-outs. This is not just a time issue. By calling time outs, he gave SF a chance to catch their breath, and gave Kaepernick time to settle himself down. Dumb, dumb, dumb. If it was a "goal to go" (meaning no possibility of a 1st down) situation, then yes, start using your time outs. But using them the way he did was stupid. I expect that annoying d-bag on Grantland to highlight this in his "thank you for not coaching" column tomorrow. We just have to accept that this risk is going to be there throughout the postseason. It was never going to be easy................
