Going into the new league year I knew(most of us knew) there were a few things the Seahawks were really going to need to get any further. More rush from the DL and a playmaker. Apparently Pete and John thought the same thing. I'm sure no one could have predicted the moves Pete and John have made. We give up a first and seventh(and a 2014 mid-rounder) to get Percy Harvin(a bargin if you ask me), then we sign Cliff Avril and Michael Bennett. Better than anything I could have hoped for really. But what really pisses me off is how much all the pants on the ground awesomeness has screwed up my mock drafting I had been working on for months(I really have no life other than sports). So starting from scratch I reworked it with people that I really liked but didn't think the Seahawks would be able to move on due to needs.
First with the 24th pick in the 2nd round CB Tyrann Mathieu. I know a lot of people may not like this pick but to me if he is there we are pretty much in a best player available position and I think he is a great talent. He has had problems we all know about and supposedly overcame them. I would love this pick because he would give us a fantastic slot DB who is a playmaker. He has a great knack for getting loose balls and creating turnover opportunities not to mention his special teams abilities. I look at him as this years Janoris Jenkins. High risk, high reward. I think this is a risk worth taking.
With the 25th pick in the 3rd round FS D.J. Swearinger. We all know that we need another safety with some range and if he lasts til this spot it is a huge get for the Seahawks. It frees the whole defense up to do a bunch of cool scheming like moving Kam up to nickle linebacker. Scary thought with all that new pass rush. He has had his issues with durability but since he would likely only see the field in nickle situations that is a trade off I would make. He is known to be hardest hitter in the class and adding that to what we have already is a nice thought. Great pick in my mind.
With the 26th pick in the 4th round LB Chase Thomas. Anybody who has seen me post on Fieldgulls on the rare occasion that I do knows I love what this kid brings to the table. I know he isn't the prototype WILL linebacker but he just knows how to play football. He has a nose for the ball and what he lacks in speed he makes up for in knowledge of the game and technique. He brings a great skill set we haven't seen at linebacker in a long time. He is great against the run and HE CAN BLITZ! He is a fantastic talent I would love to see in a Seahawks uniform.
With the 5th pick in the 5th round WR Chris Harper. This one was tough for me. There were a few guys I liked for instance Kenjon Barner for some versatility at RB and special teams but we have Percy Harvin who yes I know is a WR but will be getting those change of pace carries. What I like about Harper is he is big, 6'1" 230. Not tall obviously but damn near the size of someone like Delanie Walker. He plays like Anquan Boldin with very comparable size. He has good hands and body control and is a good run blocker. He could develop into that Joker TE we always wanted or just be our "Swiss army knife". This is the type of guy who is just a football player and I love what he brings to the table.
With the 25th pick in the 5th round OG J.C. Tretter. I know we are kind of stacked at guard and need help at tackle but Breno if he can keep his roid rage under control is a solid RT. Not the best but solid. Tretter is a project guard with a ton of upside and with Cable coaching him up could give us a little more versatility along the line. Not a sexy pick by any means but you can never have to much interior help in my opinion.
With the 26th pick in the 6th round QB Matt Scott. He may or may not be gone by this point. I have seen it both ways but if he is there I really like the upside. He has a really good arm, solid accuracy and is good runner. Athletic enough to get the edge. Anyone who watched Arizona knows what I mean. If he can get the offense down that gives the Hawks the chance to move Flynn and bring in some more picks for next year.
With the 8th pick in the 7th round DT Kwame Geathers. This is another guy I have seen projected anywhere from 4th rd to undrafted. He has great size 6'5" and 345. Very similar size and skill set to Alan Branch. He just needs some coaching. He's not a pass rushing DT by any stretch but he could turn into a solid run stuffer. Just needs to work on his technique and leverage.
So those are my slapped together picks. Obviously this is completely pointless because for all I know they could just draft OT's with every pick. They're sneaky that way.
If I knew how to embed the damn links for all their highlights I would but I don't so you'll have to type their names into youtube yourselves.
