Pro Football Hall of Fame and Allstate Insurance Company to Honor Carl Eller as “Hometown Hall of Famer™” at Atkins Academic & Technology High School in Winston-Salem, N.C.
National Program Recognizes Pro Football’s Greatest Legends in their Hometown Communities
Canton, Ohio – Feb. 26, 2013 – Pro football legend Carl Eller will be recognized by the Pro Football Hall of Fame and Allstate Insurance Company in Winston-Salem, N.C., on Tuesday, March 5, as part of “Hometown Hall of Famers™,” a national program honoring the hometown roots of the sport’s greatest coaches, players, and contributors with special ceremonies and plaque dedication events in local communities.
“’Hometown Hall of Famers™’ has been warmly embraced by communities and Hall of Famers alike,” said George Veras, Pro Football Hall of Fame Enterprises president and CEO. “We are thrilled to continue our partnership with Allstate to bring the Pro Football Hall of Fame to communities across the country and congratulate Carl Eller and Atkins Academic & Technology High School on bringing a piece of the Pro Football Hall of Fame to Winston-Salem.”
One of the most honored defensive players of his time and former high school standout at Atkins Academic & Technology High School, Eller will be presented with his “Hometown Hall of Famer™” plaque during a special ceremony at 2:30 p.m. ET on Tuesday, March 5, in the school’s auditorium, where the plaque will live permanently to serve as an inspiration for the school’s students and athletes. The presentation will be made by Hessie Smith, Eller’s former high school teammate.
“To be part of a program that brings the prestige and tradition of the Pro Football Hall of Fame to communities like Winston-Salem is an honor for Allstate, our agents and employees,” said Lisa Cochrane, Allstate’s senior vice president of marketing.
The ceremony will be attended by Atkins Academic & Technology High School students, faculty, staff, alumni and Eller’s family members and close friends.Atkins Academic & Technology High School Principal Joe Childers will serve as the Master of Ceremonies.
In addition to the plaque, a commemorative Carl Eller “Hometown Hall of Famers™” road sign will be on display in Winston-Salem.
A consensus All-American with the University of Minnesota, Eller was a first-round draft pick of both the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings and the AFL’s Buffalo Bills. Eller signed with the Vikings where he would spend the next 15 years as a key member of the Minnesota defensive line nicknamed “The Purple People Eaters.”
Eller, an excellent pass rusher and defender against the run, helped lead the Vikings to win 10 NFL/NFC Central Division titles as well as the 1969 championship. The six-time Pro Bowler played in four Super Bowls and won three NFC crowns before going to the Seattle Seahawks in 1979 for his final year in the NFL. Eller was named first- or second-team All Pro every year from 1967 through 1973 and was All-NFL or All-NFC 1968 through 1973 and then All-NFC again in 1975. He won the George Halas Award in 1971 as the NFL’s leading defensive player.
Eller was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2004.
