I've been waiting for this season since our Super Bowl. This is the season where we will actually be respected by all the analysts and by teams all around the league. We will steam roll all those who oppose us and make a statement while doing it. So far, our Seahawks have somewhat lived up to those expectations. While we haven't steam rolled, we've done enough to win. We're 3-0. Undefeated through the first three games for the first time since 2006. Here comes the praise, right?
Wrong. In my opinion, we're still disrespected when it comes to our overall team and individual players. Over the past couple of weeks, it's been so frustrating to watch ESPN and other NFL shows downplay our team. Just a week ago, all the "experts" on the NFL on Fox pregame show picked San Francisco to beat the Seahawks in Seattle. Yesterday, I watched the NFL Today on CBS and they were rating their top 5 young QB's. Dan Marino, Shannon Sharpe and Bill Cowher (the devil himself) all picked other QB's besides Russell Wilson as their top young QB. One of them (it was probably Cowher) put Wilson as the last of their 5 QB's. Most of them raved Colin Kaepernick and how great he is. I was completely disgusted. Were all these men blind? Did none of them see how bad Kaepernick was in Seattle?
This is the kind of disrespect that I'm tired of seeing. What do we have to do to earn the respect that we deserve? I think we are finally fielding the best team ever, but no one outside of Seattle seems to care. I know this seems completely ridiculous since everyone talks about us being Super Bowl favorites, but I think that's all we are. The national media briefly talks about how we are destined to win the Super Bowl on paper, and that's it. We won't make any national news unless we start to royally screw up.
We are the eternal underdog because we're in no mans land. The Pacific Northwest seems to be shunned from national attention. Most people just call us Canada which is the most disrespectful phrase I have ever heard. Growing up in Seattle, this has fueled my passion to become a sports journalist. I have adapted a dislike of east coast bias. This is the reason why the Seahawks are so rarely talked about on Sportscenter. This is why we had almost no primetime games just two years ago. Bias is painfully obvious in sports. Just try and go a day without hearing about Tom Brady or Peyton Manning. We've been the underdog for so long now and I hope it doesn't end anytime soon because I always root for the underdog.
