For better or worse, this is who we are, well maybe, hell I don't know... You decide!
Year in and year out we have proven to ourselves, the owners and the league, that we don't need to win a championship to continue to fill the seats with our beleaguered butts, turn on the broadcast, and fork out our hard earned cash for all the gear! We are the dream market and fan base for the NFL, having a Super Bowl winning team is not necessary. After all we are the 12s, the best fans in the NFL, the loudest fans on earth, we have a name and reputation to live up to, so we will protect that which we have so dearly earned, what we believe we are, and continue to show up big to support "our" team! We, perhaps more then any other fan base in the league truly believe that we are part of this team, the very successfulness of every home game depends on us right? Quite simply, we win games! We are praised and hailed for it, we are the very "poster boy" for fandom, pure NFL gold and what the league wants for all of its franchises!
Sadly we don't even ask for a title, our actions speak otherwise. Why should the league be concerned with whether or not we ever get a championship, with so little to gain... we are not the Steelers, Packers, Niners, Pats, Giants etc you get it! When said teams win, the whole league wins, revenue sharing league ...yeah occasionally we get that outlier, anomaly of a Super Bowl Champion, Tampa Bay and the Saints come to mind, helping with the whole parity bs notion! But the big boys and the big name stars are always back in the fore front and winning titles, keeping the money making machine running smoothly! The league benefits little with us winning a Super Bowl, our team, financially gains little from winning a Super Bowl, just as we the fans gain nothing save a little vindication, not when everything is already there as it currently stands.
Someone has to be the bearer of bad news... Sorry 12s, friends, and fellow fans, heart ache looms ahead. After all we are accustomed to it, we are defined by it, we even relish in it, and certainly the chip on our shoulders literally depends on it! We live and die as Hawks fans to scream to the world, "look at us, pay attention, give us credit, aren't we great, we never get noticed, you can't help but hear us now, we are loud, we are proud, we will win the big one now"!!
Our existence as we know it thrives on the transparency and irrelevancy that can only come from winning nothing, thus in a cruel twist of fate, we will continue to win everything! Live on, cheer on in blissful ignorance 12s, we are at a crossroads, should we win it all now nothing would remain but an absolute certainty of change... Evolution of the fan would be at hand. What would be our motivation to jeer and cheer should we have a Super Bowl championship banner on field? Win or lose come Sunday we have nothing to fear, either way like good, little children we will continue to cheer!
in spite of my wretched self, damn I'm a terrible fan!
