I don't need to tell you that the 12th Man was officially created back in 1984, as a way for the Seahawks to celebrate our already-raucous fans back in the old (and smelly and disgusting, but in a good way) Kingdome. We're not a bunch of "nouveau riche" bandwagon-jumpers who are rooting for this team for the first time; most of us have been around for awhile. Remember the 2005 Giants game, when Jay Feeley and his teammates literally fell apart to all the crowd noise? Yeah, I don't need to remind any real Twelves that we've been here for quite a while; just because we've traded in our Matt Hasselbeck and Lofa Tatupu jerseys for Russell Wilson and Marshawn Lynch just means we can afford to update our gear every few years, that's all.
But I do have to admit there is a different energy in the air this year. Is it that more people are coming out of the woodwork because not only is this team good right now, but has also been assumed to be Super Bowl contenders since before this season started? Yeah, a little. This team had a tremendous hot streak to end the 2012 season, especially with a team as young and exciting as this one, and a lot of people here were anticipating an even better finish to the 2013 season, and we've surely already done that. We've spent the entire season as essentially the frontrunners for appearing in this game, which you really couldn't say for last year or even 2005. There's also the play of the team itself, which is fun to watch; Wilson's scrambling, Lynch "Beast Mode-ing" for extra yards, Kam Chancellor's big (and sometimes illegal) hits, big picks from Richard Sherman and Earl Thomas.....I could go on and on.
I do believe another big difference for this team (and I really do think it makes an impact with our fandom) is how active many guys on this team are on Social Media. Pete Carroll has embraced stuff like Facebook and Twitter and YouTubeeven before coming up here to Seattle; it does seem like everyone in the NFL tweets, but this team seems to go out of it's way to stay active online, and not only do I believe it gets us fans pumped up for the Seahawks, but I believe it also encourages us to go out post awesome Seahawks-related photos and videos of our own. It's just become this snowball effect, where the Seahawks franchise, the players and the fans all keep encouraging each other.
There's the Real Rob Report, of course, and there's all the cool things Richard Sherman does at his official website, like give away gifts to fans and raise money for charities and updates his blog; and Russell Wilson is always posting something on Twitter or Facebook, and a lot of the time it's visiting kids in the hospital. Would we even know about Marshawn and his skittles if it wasn't for Twitter, let alone the BeastQuake run? Of course, that singular play in of itself has inspired so much Seahawks love.
There's so much Seahawks love out here (even before the playoffs started) that my Facebook news feed is OVERFLOWING with awesome 12th man photos and videos and anecdotes and everything else you can think of....And I'm pretty sure there's a lot of stuff out there that I've missed. Here is but a tiny, almost microscopic look at 12th Man awesomeness:
And here are some awesome Seahawks videos I found on YouTube; the first one is by Making of a Champion:
Here's the "Better Seahawks Anthem" by Eric Keith VellVett:
And there is so, so, SO much more out there! The point of nthis fanpost is that there's so much great Seahawks social media out there, and so much of it inspired by this great team as well as our own passion, and it's a wondrous thing we should all celebrate. Feel free to share more awesome Seahawks tweets, Vines, instagrams and other stuff in the comments!
