So I have now watched the Super Bowl four times ... live (obviously) and three times with the help of the good ole DVR. A few random thoughts:
1. What an absolutely gorgeous game plan and execution. Naturally. Congrats to Malcolm Smith and thank you to our revamped defensive line!
2. Great games: Malcolm Smith, Avril, Clemons, Mebane, Kam, Earl, Wright, RW, Kearse, Baldwin, Harvin. I thought Harvin might get the MVP, and he might have if he caught one or two more passes, and he definitely would have if he didn't step out of bounds on his first run.
3. Nitpicking an off-game (in a blowout mind you): Two players - Russell Okung had two penalties that brought back big plays and a false start. Walter Thurmond who looked like a severe weak link in the secondary (relative to All-Pro's and a guy that would be All-Pro if he played all year in Maxwell).
4. More thoughts on Thurmond - I found two particular plays to be a bit telling and I think his future in the NFL is somewhere outside of Seattle. First, when he ran into Kam that gave up a "big" play/pass to Welker. Kam seemed to say something and walk away a bit, and Maxwell's body language was similar to "Man, what are you doing?!" Second, when he went down with that minor injury right after Sherman, you don't really see the secondary around him and making sure he is OK, etc. Just a small 'something' that has caught my attention in re-watching the game.
What does this team need? Umm, hard to pick that apart right now, but depth anywhere is an obvious selection. Offensive line, a linebacker, and figuring out what veteran(s) can be brought back / found in FA to continue the rotations on the defensive line.
I also think Doug Baldwin has really played himself into a new contract and he would be my significant preference over Tate. As good as Tate is on special teams, we have a new toy in Percy Harvin to do that moving forward (along with Baldwin, Turbin, and others).
Thoughts? Have you come back to earth yet?
