I was on twitter earlier today, and I noticed a tweet by Matt Miller:
Now, Miller's a big-time guy who's followed by tens of thousands of people, and thousands more read his pieces on Bleacher Report (though it's not the best analysis much of the time), and, for the most part, he does a good job. So seeing that tweet really got me thinking about how good we have it here on Field Gulls.
I haven't been around FG for that long, just about a year and a half. I was introduced by my dad, who I think was introduced by my uncle. He piqued my interest by saying the slogan was "The stupidest name for smart football analysis". Now, I'd been a fan of the Seahawks for a long time, really since about 2005, when I was living in Enumclaw at age 9 watching the Seahawks play the Steelers, and I remember being heartbroken when they lost (my dad, usually a very calm man, actually yelled at the TV a little big on the offensive pass interference call in the endzone), but I was always kind of a passive fan. I usually played as the Ravens, Saints, or Patriots in madden, I kept up with the team, but didn't actually follow it, and it was just...there, but it was during the 2012 preseason, when I was introduced to one Russell Carrington Wilson, and his ability, story, charisma, and seeming perfectness, I got right back into it. There was a problem though, I really didn't know anything much about football. I mean, I knew about as much as anyone who plays Madden did, but as we all know, Madden doesn't always tell you everything.
This site got me learning about the concepts that I could never get in madden. I learned about timing routes, about stunts on the D-line, about zone blocking, about what's good for man, and what's good for zone, how to beat both man and zone, about 4-3 vs 3-4 (this team was especially good for that since we play basically both). Then I was introduced to Seahawks Draft Blog, and the scouting work that the folks around here do. The numbers analysis that we get here is second to none, just ask CSC. This is the best football website that I've ever been to. They're fair to the fans of other teams (unless those fans are dicks), the comments are cohesive (except for "dwade is better den jordan 3.0", but he was hilarious), The fanposts are better than some of the other site's actual writer's stuff.
So I just wanted to say thank you to all the people here who write, who read, and who comment. You've made this season a real treat to celebrate most of the time, to endure some of the time, and to enjoy all the times in between. I wouldn't be half the nerd that I am without you, and that's a good thing.
(quick little tidbit, because of this site I was able to help one of my friends win his fantasy league, I don't play myself)
