After I just wrote a post talking about no talent being available at 32, there is one guy who I think fits what we want at a position of need. Joel Bitonio did come from the same school as that Kaepernick guy, but I think he could be a stud at right tackle for us. Watching his tape against Anthony Barr, who I think is a top 10 talent, is exceptional. He consistently gets push against the run and handles Barr’s quickness and agility coming off the edge. His tape against Florida State’s rotation of defensive linemen was good and he does not give up a sack in the tape that I saw. Bitonio also faced second tier pass rushers in Damarcus Lawrence and Kyle Van Noy.
The arm length is concerning though and could force Tom Cable to put him at guard. With that being said the tenacity and mean streak that Bitonio would bring to this offensive line would be awesome. Having Okung (if healthy), Bitonio, and Unger on the left side would be awesome and we can finally get James Carpenter’s sorry ass out of Seattle. Whenever Carpenter comes up in conversation between friends, my mood suddenly takes a turn for the worse as he was a complete waste in one of the best draft classes in recent memory.
If the Nevada offensive lineman is available at 32, I wouldn’t be shocked at all if we picked him up with the idea of putting him all over the offensive line knowing that he can handle himself. Also, when Okung inevitably gets hurt we will have a better backup option than Paul McQuistain. Disclaimer: McQuistain makes me more infuriated than Carpenter, just look at what Robert Quinn did to him on that Monday nighter.
If Pete and John decided to make a selection at 32, don’t be shocked to see an offensive lineman rather than a playmaking wide receiver or tight end. The need at tackle will be even more magnified when we will probably have to lose Russell Okung to free agency due to his health concerns and Russell Wilson’s pending $20 million contract.
