Seahawks outside linebacker Bruce Irvin had hip surgery today and will be sidelined from Seattle's off-season program indefinitely. The team provided no other details, but Irvin assuaged fears a little by tweeting that he'll be back and ready for Training Camp.
Didn't want this to get out but I'm fine! Will b back by training camp! For all u people saying this a make or break year for me!— Bruce Irvin (@BIrvin_WVU11) June 2, 2014
If I woulda missed any games I wouldn't have got it I decided to proceed because I could b back soon. #watchmework— Bruce Irvin (@BIrvin_WVU11) June 2, 2014
You can't always believe a player's glass-half-full diagnosis, but this may imply that the procedure was relatively minor. One can hope.
Irvin joins Percy Harvin and Kam Chancellor as Seahawks with recent hip surgeries, randomly. Harvin is back up to full speed, and Chancellor and the team have said he should be back by training camp as well. Russell Okung recently had surgery on his foot.
Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times provided a few more personnel notes from Seahawks OTAs:
- LB O'Brien Schofield and Malcolm Smith were on the sidelines today. Schofield failed a physical with the Giants earlier this offseason because of a reported knee issue, so perhaps the Seahawks plan to just take a "Kellen Winslow" tack with him by limiting reps and managing the issue season long. Smith had a procedure to remove loose bodies in his ankle and Condotta notes he's now out of the walking boot he was seen wearing recently. Sidney Rice is still sidelined as he rehabs from ACL surgery.
- DT Tony McDaniel, RB Marshawn Lynch, CB Phillip Adams, DT Andru Pulu and DT/DE Cassius Marsh were also gone. McDaniel and Adams missed practice due to personal reasons, and Pulu and Marsh still cannot attend because their schools are still in session (dumbest rule ever). Marshawn Lynch misses OTAs every year. So, yeah.
- RB Spencer Ware, LB Heath Farwell and TE RaShaun Allen sat out with what Condotta called "bumps and bruises" types of minor injuries. Michael Bowie left practice early.
