Now that the World Cup is over, I keep hearing in various circles something like this:
"Now Americans can go back to not caring about soccer for four years."
"Only fifty-some days until REAL football begins!"
I'm just as much a Seahawks' guy as the rest of the Twelves represented here on Field Gulls. It's both an honor and a privilege to be allowed as a part of a great community of individuals whom share a common passion for our beloved team. While yes, I do look forward to the start of the title defense, I also know that technically, soccer (futbol) isn't quite over for me, either. Sure, there won't be another international tournament until next year. But in the meantime, there's still plenty of MLS action to watch. Club soccer may not have the same flavor as international play, but gosh darn it, it's the Seattle Sounders that I will still root for, and will still defend against all the soccer-haters out there. I may never make it to the mecca known as the CLink to take in a Sounders' home match or a Seahawks' home game, but I will still pull for both teams and proudly wear the blue-and-green, representing the Twelves and the Emerald City Supporters here in the Mid-Atlantic. Names like Clint Dempsey, DeAndre Yedlin, and Obafemi Martins will be just as much of household names in my house like Russell Wilson, Marshawn Lynch, Malcolm Smith, and Doug Baldwin.
The typical MLS season lasts from March through the first part of December. Sure, it eventually overlaps part of the NFL season. But that's when it becomes the best of both worlds for me on the weekend. Sounders matches one day, followed by a Seahawks game the next. Should the Sounders hoist the US Open Cup (officially sanctioned tournament between MLS, NASL, USL PRO teams), the Supporters' Shield (given to the team with the best record at the end of the MLS regular season), the MLS Western Conference Cup, followed by the Philip F. Anschutz trophy in December; and the Hawks repeat as NFC West champions, NFC conference champions, and finally, lift the Lombardi again in February down in the Arizona desert...
Heck. I just might have to come up with a rockin' design for a shirt to commemorate the occasion.
