Friend, Family, Enemies....

I figured I would share with the field gulls community my interaction with one of my good friends who is a rabid Niners fan. Please excuse my spelling and grammatical errors. I am a scientist, not a writer. You may know the difference between there, their and they're, but do you know what happens when you add water (rapidly) to Sulphuric Acid?I will do my best not to make many mistakes and write coherently.

Deep in the heart of the wine country of Washington, lives a man whose love for sports knows no bounds. He is a close friend that I consider family. We agree on almost everything, except that this man happens to be a rabid fan of our bitter rival..... those of whom should not be cheered for.

I have known this man since the fall of 05', when I had to cross the mountains to obtain my ed-ju-mu-cation from the big red brick house on the hill. At first, he seemed like a nice gentlemen. Someone you could go get a cheap pitcher of lager with and discuss the many nice looking ladies walking around. However, everyone has a dark side. Little did I know that his dark side was that he cheered for....them. And boy, did he cheer for them. Any team that was playing against the Niners sucked. Defending Super Bowl Champs, nope they suck. High powered offense, not against the powerhouse D of the 2006 Niners.

From 05'-07' the discussions were relatively short when it came to Seattle and the Niners. My take, they suck, Hawks rule. His rebuttal.... 5 trophies and that the Hawks sucked. This went on and on and on. Then the slump happened. The year of Mora was particularly brutal. Years went by and business decisions were made, money was bet and lost, and then it happened. The mighty hawks finally swept down from the Heavens and smoat the ones whom need to be smoated(word?). The trophy was ours. The Red and Gold blood had been spilled. Sweet, sweet justice had been served on a cold, iron platter.

The year 2014 is a new age. A robot now commands what seems to be a computerized offense. The defense is now battle hardened and wiser. And yet, this man still haunts me. With his incoherent rants about how his people would rise again and take the throne of which we have fought so hard for.

I share with you now my conversations with a common Niners fan. I am in no way saying that all Niners fans are like him. What I am saying is that some of the stuff that comes out of this guys mouth can make you laugh for hours on end, or send you into a blind rage from all of the stupidity. These conversations are not "PC." Shit is talked, things are said. We all have friends like this.

Recently the topic of preseason has been brought up between me and my friend. I happen to believe that preseason matters, he on the other hand does not. I can only assume that if the Niners were not 1-2 in the preseason, this conversation would have never happened. My argument for the preseason is that it gives teams a chance to showcase the level of depth that they have. It allows teams to test out new, young additions and it also gives the veterans a chance to get their feet wet again. HIs take.... it doesn't matter. I recently asked him how he felt about Gabbert having more TD's than Kaepernick in preseason. His response (we will call him EF) is as follows:

EF: Considering it's preseason, I'm good. He should have more since he's played more than twice as much. Its the fact that Kappy doesn't have anything what's a lil alarming.

MM: Thats my point. You can keep saying preseason means nothing, but it shows everyone depth and team play. So far, Niners have none of either.

EF: look at last years preseason for the Niners. Not much different than this year haha. They just dont like showing teams what they got.

MM: If they have anything.

EF: Haha, they did just fine last year with ONE receiver.... this year we have 3 PROVEN studs with a couple youngsters to handle the rest. Oh, not to mention, a stud running back to add to out other 2....

MM: Really? Then how do explain Kappy going 12 for 22 with 115 yards in 3 games?

As of this time, there has been no response from him.

I have my opinion of what he said, but what I really want to know is what the Field gulls community thinks. Do you really think that we had 3 PROVEN studs? What about that stud group of RB's?

Side bets of the year.

I made a couple side bets with him this year that could come back to bite me, or not. The first bet is that he believes Russell Wilson will have a LOWER (thats right, lower) QBR rating than Kaepernick. I just so happen to disagree. Stipulation is that each QB has to be play a minimum of 8 games. Wager: $100 I think I have this one in the bag

Second bet is an overall record bet. I believe the Hawks will have a better record. He disagrees greatly. Wager: $100

I feel as though these side bet are pretty solid. So, if you are feeling froggy, I recommend that you find a friend that is a Niners fan and make these bets with him. You will be $200 richer for it. (Feel free to donate to "Mr.Magoo needs a beer" fund if you win)

As always, Go Hawks.
