Hawks Roster - then and now

Hey fellow 12s! Happy Mother's Day! Hope you all are doing well. I've been meaning to post some of my Hawks-related writing and charts but I've been really underwater with other things this spring. Better now than in the fall, though, right?

Anyway, I threw a chart into a comment this week and Mister Bunny requested that I put up a fanpost on the topic. I decided to get something up this weekend even if it is not as in-depth as I would prefer it to be. So, with thanks to Mister Bunny, let's get to it!

Below is a chart of the defensive guys on the current 90-man roster. Now some players could be listed under other categories but I think how they've been assigned below is reasonable. The real value is seeing who is available to compete and at what position. I've also listed them by rank - the Seahawks rank each of their players and I've gone ahead and ranked them at each position. It's all very preliminary, though. For example, Steven Terrell will be one of the guys pushed for his spot but I feel it's too early to slot a rookie free agent ahead of someone who played 127 snaps on Special Teams and 17 snaps on Defense last year by my count.

Here's our current Defensive roster:

Now compare that to this chart of mine of the 90-man roster back in July (with my rankings):

I've got a lot to say about all of this - two pictures should generate around 2,000 words - a lot has changed since then but I'll have to leave this for you guys to discuss for now. I will say this, though. I've written a lot about Cornerback since last fall and hope to get some of this out to you guys in a fanpost. We were pretty thin there last July!

Here's the current crew on the Offense and Special Teams side:

And compare with my projected roster from July 2015:

I really like the direction our roster is taking and look forward to seeing it take shape over the next few months. I was super salty during Free Agency this year. I was of the mindset that aside from a few minor issues we had plenty of talent and depth everywhere with the exception of Offensive line. We didn’t have a lot of money to throw around in free agency, but I felt that we could do and I wanted us to do at least three things:

  1. Resign one of Rubin/Mebane
  2. Overpay for a Center or Guard (preferably not named Sweezy)
  3. Overpay for a Left Tackle (preferably not named Okung
I mean, that's how free agency works in general, but especially for a high demand position like LT, C, or any decent Olineman for that matter. You overpay for proven talent on the market. I know that’s not how we work, but I wanted us to make an exception just this once, for sake of Russell Wilson’s health. What’s the point of assembling so much talent if your franchise QB is in deadly peril on every dropback? But, PC/JS stuck with their philosophy and refused to overpay for mediocre, if proven, talent. They signed internal Free Agents and depth guys for competition. Then, they hit the Oline, DLine, RB positions hard in the draft. It might not be enough to win it all this year but they did not mortgage the future and turn away from their principles in a desperate attempt to win now. That's win forever and always compete in a nutshell and looking back, I feel bad that I even wanted them to change.

Go Hawks!
