DT D'Anthony Smith waived; WR Bryan Walters and DT Sealver Siliga added back to Practice Squad

The Seahawks released DT D'Anthony Smith, only a few weeks after trading for him. The compensation for the trade with the Jaguars was never disclosed - only known to be a conditional late-round pick - so it will be interesting to see if the conditions for the trade were satisfied. If they were, Seattle will forfeit a pick, but if not, no harm no foul. For what it's worth, Ryan O'Halloran, of the Florida Times-Union, notes that a source said the trade was contingent on Smith being active for '3 or 5 games' . If it were indeed three, that would explain why Smith was inactive last week.

Smith played 13 snaps in Week 1's win against the Panthers and 33 snaps in Week 2's win over the Niners, but was inactive Week 3 after the team re-signed DT Clinton McDonald. McDonald, who was brought back after the veteran guaranteed contract timeframe had come and gone, had 1.5 sacks against the Jaguars and looked good playing the role that I'm guessing Seattle had in mind for Smith. If you're wondering why McDonald was released in the first place, well, he is now making $630,000 this season instead of the $1.3M he would have been due on a restricted free agent tender. Cap.

Smith, as Big Cat Country tells us,

...was a third-round pick in the 2010 NFL Draft of the Jaguars, but didn't make his debut for the team until two seasons later after tearing his Achilles tendon as a rookie and injuring his foot in 2011. After playing in eight games for the Jaguars in 2012, Smith was on the roster bubble heading into 2013 and was listed as one of the players set to be released in the team's final cuts.

The Hawks likely went ahead with the Smith trade as an insurance policy after deciding to part ways with Jaye Howard. Jordan Hill's bicep is likely getting closer to healthy and with the re-addition of McDonald, the emergence of Tony McDaniel, and the high-level play of Michael Bennett, Smith was a victim of the numbers game. Of his 46 snaps as a Seahawk, I can't really say any were too memorable.

The roster spot Smith vacates remains, as of this time, empty. Not that this necessarily means anything, but former 49ers DT/FB Will Tukuafu visited the VMAC Monday.

In practice squad churning, the Hawks cut DE Adewale Ojomo and added WR Bryan Walters and DT Sealver Siliga. I can't keep track of their incessant practice squad movement so I'm not sure how that math works. Who cares.
