Kam Chancellor had surgery on his hip

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

What does it mean?

John Clayton first reported that Kam Chancellor planned to have "minor" surgery on his hip about a month ago and while Kam sort of played off the report as untrue at the time, it was confirmed today by Ian Rapoport this afternoon. The team subsequently confirmed the report, and noted the surgery happened a month ago. So, what does this mean?

Well, it's obviously still unclear. Rapoport notes that Chancellor "will hope" to be ready by "this preseason," which is so vague and ambiguous that it will certainly create some consternation among the fanbase. Chancellor's injury dates back over a year and it's something that he played through in 2013, but it would seem the Pro Bowl safety and the team wanted to nip the problem in the bud this offseason so he won't have to deal with the issue during the upcoming season (in theory).

The somewhat surprising decision for the Seahawks to tender restricted free agent Jeron Johnson at a 2nd round level earlier this offseason pointed to the idea that Seattle wanted some insurance at the position, and it's clear that the team's depth at safety is untested after Chris Maragos left in free agency. DeShawn Shead - who replaced Kam in the Super Bowl when Chancellor missed a few plays - is the other primary backup for Chancellor and Earl Thomas, and past that, there's not much experience in the group.

Will this mean that safety is higher on the Seahawks priority list in this week's Draft? We shall see.
