Two very different sports with two wildly different franchises. The Seahawks are on the verge of a title, and the Mariners are nowhere close.

The Seahawks' John Schneider has built depth expertly. | SportsonEarth.com : Dan Pompei Article
There is a manual for team building that many general managers refer to and adhere to. For some, it is a professional bible. If John Schneider's manual isn't in the paper shredder, it has to be covered with dust. The Seattle Seahawks general manager did not build his team by the book. He built it by feel. And he built it without a pattern.

Why So Serious? Why Richard Sherman's Post-Game Rant Shouldn't Matter | Bleacher Report
Case in point, Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman has created a whirlwind of criticism and debate after jolting the sports world with an outlandish interview following Seattle's victory over San Francisco.

'Come At The King, You Best Not Miss' - Over the Cap
“He’s a sheer competitor, phenomenal athlete, and I think those of us mortals who don’t have those abilities, sometimes it’s hard to discern the difference between that natural confidence born by that ability, and what some would label as arrogance or conceit.” Believe it or not, the above quote isn’t about Richard Sherman—it’s former Ravens Head Coach Brian Billick putting his psychologist hat on, attempting to explain the rash personality of Randy Moss.

Film Room: Manning against Seattle in the preseason
On August 17th, Denver traveled to Seattle for each team’s second game of the preseason. Some people think the preseason is meaningless, but I thought it would be worthwhile to rewatch the first half of that game. “When you really love somebody and care for them, you do everything you can help them be everything they can be,” Carroll said on the radio. “At times they are going to make mistakes and break your heart, but if you love them, you stay with them. You give [them] the best chance to be all they can be. Richard is a wonderful spirit. He’s got an amazing heart, and he has great sensitivity. He goes all the way to the end of the spectrum when it comes to expressing himself.”

FOOTBALL OUTSIDERS: Innovative Statistics, Intelligent Analysis | Clutch Encounters: Conference Championships
The best Championship Sunday on paper in a long time did not fully live up to expectations, but it was still a satisfying day of football, leading to a dream matchup of the NFL's top offense against the top defense in Super Bowl XLVIII. Both No. 1 seeds won their conference for just the second time in the salary-cap era (since 1994).

FOOTBALL OUTSIDERS: Innovative Statistics, Intelligent Analysis | Week 20 DVOA Ratings
As usual after the Conference Championship games, we're not going to bother with the full 32-team table of weighted DVOA ratings, since there are only two teams left and most teams haven't played for three weeks. Instead, let's just look at the two remaining teams, Seattle and Denver. As you may remember from the end of the season, Seattle and Denver are the first teams to ever rank 1-2 in DVOA for two straight seasons, going back to 1989. Some other interesting notes about the rarity of a Super Bowl that matches the two best teams in the league:

They say that success is never final, and failure is never fatal … but it’s hard to wrap one’s head around the subtleties of those two divergent forces after losing a conference championship game. Now, for those teams, the analysis portion of the year begins. Where are the holes? How can they be filled? Here’s one potential issue for the two teams eliminated on Sunday.
