Seahawks Podcast: 2012 NFL Draft Talk with Derek Stephens & Davis Hsu, Part III

Photo

Today we give you part three, the final segment of a great 2012 NFL Draft podcast, recorded in studio by our own Davis Hsu and Derek Stephens. If you haven't yet, make sure you check out Part One and Part Two then re-visit this post after. This capstone portion, 58-minutes of glory, focuses on quarterbacks. Rumor has it that there may be some interest in that particular position in the Seahawks front office and possibly among the fanbase.

I want to take this time to personally thank Derek and Davis for putting these together - seriously a great look at a large portion of the players that have been linked, one way or another, to the Seahawks, over the last couple of months. Talking to Derek and Davis personally, just in running this site, has completely affirmed my confidence in their knowledge and my respect for their opinions, and these podcasts are a great way for all Field Gulls readers to get some exposure to their perspectives that I'm lucky enough to get so frequently by editing this site. Anyway, good sh*t guys.

For a recap - in case you are a newcomer here, Derek, in addition to writing here at Field Gulls, is an expert draft contributor at First Round Exchange‬, a contributor at NFL.com's NFL Blog Blitz, has scouted for Lindy's Sports Pro Football Draft Guide and provided player draft analysis at NFLDraftScout.com while working closely with Rob Rang. He also has his own draft site in development - ScoutTheDraft.com - that I'll be sure to point you towards whenever there are updates. Derek has done a series here at Field Gulls called the Rookie Report that you should definitely check out.

Davis has a wide focus of subjects here, but he mostly likes to write about the big picture stuff like salary cap management, roster building and sustainment, draft strategy - all that good stuff. The two of them together, talking draft, makes for a pretty interesting listen and is definitely informative.

Check out the final segment (until they meet again, hopefully soon) after the jump!

Seahawks Podcast: 2012 NFL Draft Talk with Derek Stephens & Davis Hsu, Part II

Photo

Today we give you part two of a great 2012 NFL Draft podcast, recorded in studio by our own Davis Hsu and Derek Stephens. This 37-minute segment focuses on linebackers, a position of obvious need for the Seahawks going into 2012.

To re-introduce the series I'll refer back to Davis' blurb about what you'll be listening to:

It is always great to talk football with Derek Stephens. Whenever I bring up a prospect with him, eight out of ten times, depending on how deep we are into the season- he has watched this player and has an opinion on him. This is a more formalized representation of one of these conversations.

In these Seahawks targeted podcasts - we cover a lot of the pass rushers in the 2012 Draft: Quinton Coples, Nick Perry, Whitney Mercilus, Andre Branch, Jared Crick, Billy Winn, Chandler Jones, Vinny Curry, Cam Johnson, Shea McClellin and Jack Crawford. [That was part one, found here]

Obviously, if you are an NFL fan, there is good stuff for you because your team is likely interested in many of the same players. We also move toward several OLB (both pass rushing and more traditional LB) including: Courtney Upshaw, Melvin Ingram, Ronnell Lewis, Bruce Irvin, Josh Kaddu, Zach Brown, Lavonte David, Sean Spence and more.

Seahawks Podcast: 2012 NFL Draft Talk with Derek Stephens & Davis Hsu

Photo

Happy Monday everyone - to start you off this week, we've got a podcast for you featuring Derek Stephens and Davis Hsu, with talk about the upcoming NFL Draft, players and positional groups the Seahawks might have or should have interest in.

In case you are a newcomer here, Derek, in addition to writing here at Field Gulls, is an expert draft contributor at First Round Exchange‬, a contributor at NFL.com's NFL Blog Blitz, has scouted for Lindy's Sports Pro Football Draft Guide and provided player draft analysis at NFLDraftScout.com while working closely with Rob Rang.

Here is Davis' introduction to the series, to give you a better idea of what to expect:

One thing about Derek, he does not care what other draft experts think about a player. Just because ten other analysts like a guy in Round One - he might not touch a guy until Round Four. Additionally, he likes players that others criticize because of their measureables. You may or may not agree with where Derek rates a player, but he is consistent to his framework below:

We talk about this in the podcasts, but Derek looks at four things when evaluating a player (character and measurables are not on the list):

1) Consistency (two years of good football, game tape)
2) Fundamentals (feet, hands, upright or low, weight transfer, etc...)
3) Awareness
4) Decision Making

Lastly, the Combine and All-Star Games are low on Derek's list when compared to how a player has played in real games over the last two years. Height, weight and 40 times to him are not as important as football speed and football plays. Awareness, instincts and making football plays.

Hope you enjoy these podcasts! (Check out the link after the jump...)

Seahawks Podcast: Scott Enyeart Reps Field Gulls on Sports Radio KJR

Photo

In case you're just now tuning in to the awesomeness of this website, Scott Enyeart is a staff writer and podcast contributor here at Field Gulls, covers the USC Trojans for Neon Tommy, and has unique connections to Pete Carroll and a number of the Seahawks' staff from their days down in Southern California. With his his ties to Carroll, Pat Ruel, and a number of other insiders with the Seahawks from his years covering them while they were at USC, he has an interesting perspective on what's going on at the VMAC, so it's nice to hear his take. PS, did you know that Pat Ruel's real first name is "Golden?" What are the odds of having two Goldens in the same organization?

Anywho, Enyeart was on SportsRadioKJR's Dave "Softy" Mahler show yesterday morning, talking with snow-substitute host Jason Puckett on all things Seahawks. They hit on a little bit of everything - the past season, the upcoming NFL Draft, the quarterback situation of course, and it's definitely worth a listen. Check it out after the jump.

Field Gulls Radio, Vol1: The Alamo Bowl, Robert Griffin III, a Baylor Scouting Report, the Seahawks and the NFC West

This kid absolutely frickin loves Field Gulls radio. He listens every week.

We haven't really come up with a catchy and witty name for the Field Gulls podcast yet but Scott Enyeart, Daniel Hill and I recorded our first of what will probably be a weekly or semi-monthly feature here at the site during the offseason to supplement what Scott and I do with KJRSportsRadio and our buddy Jason Puckett.

This week, we talk about the Seahawks loss to the 49ers on Sunday, chat a bit about Mark Sanchez and the Seahawks quarterback position, and talk a little about the Hawks' upcoming game with the Cardinals. What it means in the long run, what 8-8 would mean for the team and the coaching staff, and what it would mean to sweep the division with the exception of San Francisco.

Also - in case you're planning on watching the Alamo Bowl tonight this is a must listen, as Daniel, a former member of the Baylor football program and former teammate of Robert Griffin III, gives his take on RG3 as a QB and future NFL player, and gives a great scouting report on what to expect from the Baylor Bears tonight as they take on the Huskies.

The Field Gulls and SportsRadioKJR 12th Man Podcast for Week 14

(Not really on the air)

This week's podcast is now up and ready for a listen. Scott Enyeart, Jason Puckett and I rap about the Philly win, the Seahawks tight end heavy schemes, the injury situation, and the upcoming game with the Rams. We chat about what the Seahawks can and will do to hold on to Tom Cable and a possible playoff run.

Check out the podcast at KJR Sportsradio's website, or see it embedded below. It should be up on iTunes soon as well. I spit some stats at you regarding the Seahawks last four games and the new run-heavy identity the've taken on, including their time of possession, run vs pass ratio, and a few other interesting picadillos.

Hit us up with some feedback - what do you like, what kinds of things would you like to add? Let us know if there's a subject you want us to talk about next week and we'll try to include that as well.
