Exhibition Game 1: Dallas 13, Seattle 3

After the 1st quarter, I saw almost none of this game. Based on what I did see, and what I heard on the radio, however:

  • Our O-line needs to gel a bit, which I think we all expected.
  • Our defense was out of synch, but that's what the preseason is for. Their speed impressed me greatly. The decision-making needs coaching, but the raw talent is definitely there.
  • Dallas's offense looks pretty formidable -- and this is without their main guns. Hate to say it, but watching this game, you have to get good vibes about the Cowboys' offensive system.
  • I know I've been teasing him a lot, just by virtue of his chosen position, but Ryan Plackemeier's punting was pretty damn impressive. Good range, outstanding hangtime, and even the wobbly punt we heard on the radio seemed to get under control. They don't give the Ray Guy Award for nothin'.
Next up: Indy, which I promise to watch from start to finish. I'm forcing myself to take Sunday off, so we'll check back in Monday.

From what I saw
  1. Herndon hasn't changed. I heard on three separate occasions: "[Blank] caught the ball in front of Herndon." The guy just doesn't make good decisions, and I hope that he is nothing more than a nickel back again this year. He's so unreliable.
  2. Mo Morris looks beefier this year.
  3. Mo Mann looked pretty damn impressive.
  4. Plackemeier's punting motion is so smooth and easy. He doesn't have a huge wind-up that could lead to a lot of blocked punts. He doesn't even really take a step forward. He just crushes the ball with his foot. He'll be a significant improvement over Rouen.
  5. Shaun Alexander was running very timidly last night. I know that Dallas has a good run defense, but on only one of his six rushing attempts yesterday did he look like a good running back.
  6. Taco Wallace still doesn't know what the hell is going on.

You'd have to think Shaun was ordered not to execute at full capacity.

I saw a tiny sliver of the 4th quarter at the establishment I was at last night, and saw Mo break away for a big gain. That was also really impressive.

If Plackemeier hadn't already sealed up the punting job, he clinched it last night. Quite an upgrade.

Ya
maybe Shaun was out there just to get used to reading blocks? I didn't see or hear anything about the game.

But considering the Redskins just lost Clinton Portis for a while I am glad shaun isn't taking any chances

Leonard Weaver
needs to make this team.  Somehow as a KR, 3rd down back, something....he is just too good to not be.

He'll make it.
The only question is how he'll ramp up his game when the time comes to succeed Mack Strong. He's too versatile to leave off the team.

No offense
but no chance he will be the next strong.  Thats why we drafted Kirtman.  Kick me in the balls, but i see weaver as a third down back.

Had to miss it
But doesn't sound like I missed much, when the doings of the rookie punter turn out to be the main positive takeaway.

Gotta love preseason.  If watching a preseason game is like kissing your sister, losing one is like being rejected by your sister.

I'm going to resist making any jokes about, say, people in Arkansas.
