Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

You Can't Have a Post-Mortem If You're Not Dead.

Common sense dictates that this would be a good time to recap the Seahawks' season, but I think the last big post I made below (the motivational speaker one) says most anything I'm likely to say.

The Seahawks did not make the improbable happen this afternoon, but they did almost everything possible. We can, and probably will, talk about certain turning points that could have put Seattle in a position to win this, but didn't come through. That's our job. It's sort of imperative that we, as an information source, try to do that at some point. Right now I don't wanna.

My most minimal wish for the outcome of this game that, regardless of result, I thought was possible to be granted, was that the Seahawks played the game like they belonged to be at this point in the postseason. That over the course of this game, nobody could say the Seahawks didn't deserve to be playing for a berth in the championship game. That I could walk down the street wearing my Seahawks gear and not feel ashamed.

I'm planning on doing that the next time I go outside. I'm leaning towards the sweatshirt. I may go with the hat.

The big wish -- a win -- wasn't granted, but it came real, real close to becoming reality. The little wish, that the Seahawks prove their mettle and be seen as fully deserving to be here? Absolutely, and maybe even a little more than that.

We have all off-season to specualte, assess our needs, hope we get them filled, and figure out how to get back to the Super Bowl. This game could have broken our spirit to do so. I think it did the opposite. I hope so, anyway.

There will be a new NFC champion this season. But as it turned out, the "football gods" (I hate that phrase) had to wrestle that trophy from our hands. They did not walk away with it. We did not just give it up.

And for that reason, I am, curiously, not depressed right now. Sad? Yeah. Despondent? Not even close.

Just read the below post again when you're done with whatever mourning you deem appropriate.

And don't go away during the off-season. We're still gonna be here. We got plans.

This is a job for font size 7:

I feel good about today.
I mean, in the not a sore loser kind of way. I honestly expected the Hawks to get destroyed. In spite of their weaknesses, they went out and played a great game. The Defense was actually downright impressive in some spots. Alexander had a great game. The one thing that I get grumpy about is the disgusting inability to convert third and short situations. But what the heck...the team for most of the season was in shambles with injuries, and they still make it this far and give the Bears a serious run for their money. Thats hard not to like.

Anyhow...spring training is around the corner and I await the M's season with a morbid anticipation.  Here is to hoping the Hawks make some great decisions this off season. I hope for the sake of the M's that one of those moves is giving Bavasi a job in the mail room.

Whaaa?
Why don't you want the Mariners to get their mail this season?

I called it too...
Because it was the right play at the right time.  Chicago was completely not ready for it.  We've run the draw this year better then any other run play and I've found it odd we haven't used it more.  Ah well.
DAMNIT!

"But as it turned out, the "football gods" (I hate that phrase) had to wrestle that trophy from our hands. They did not walk away with it. We did not just give it up."

So true, the team fought hard and refused to quit, when they easily could have.  Honestly I cam VERY close to giving up at a few points and im just a fan watching.

After the thursday lose to the niners I just wanted this season over, I almost wanted them to go 8-8 just so the misery would be over.  I thought for sure I would end the season disgusted and frustraded, but I didn't.  The team pulled together, played hard and gave max effort (yes that includes Stevens).  10 yards here or there and we might be on our way to New Orleans.

4 weeks ago I wanted to puke on my hawks jersey, right now I am proudly wearing my Hasselbeck jersey!

HAWKS IN 08!!!

p.s. thanks to shrug and everyone that posted for a fun season, you guys made it so much more fun..especially with all the highs and lows for our boys.

Josh Brown is better than you.

how about hawks in 07?
It sucks to say this but our defense was playing lights out in the fourth quarter, matt doesn't make one of the worst passes of his career, we win the game.  Oh well.

Team is in great shape.  Going into the season the o line was old and worrisome, with spencer and sims being great the o line is now young and great.

We probably have the best LB corps in the NFL.

Jennings played like a rookie this year, great at times, awful at other times.  He will be an anchor in years to come.  Babineaux is really good as a nickle corner.

Matt struggled today, looked great at times but overall he played pretty poorly.  him getting fully healthy for next year will be fun to watch, but I would like to see more 3-4 wide sets.

Not having a first round pick sucks in draft talk (not as much to look forward too) but I would rather have branch than a first rounder.

woops, meant 2007
well Hawks in 2008 as well and 2009.

I would agree, Matt was not at his best.  I think we also have to remember he's playing with a banged up knee and left hand and that's why im sorta cutting him some slack.

I wouldn't praise Matt today, but im still a huge fan of his.

Heck 9 more yards and we're all signing his praises and talking about how good he is in the 2 minute drill.

Josh Brown is better than you.

by MFAN on Jan 14, 2007 2:53 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

we don't really need a first-rounder
Because I don't see us as having a single glaring weakness that has to be fixed. I think our wish list is first, a DT who can stop the run, and from there of marginal importance another TE, and a secondary/OL pick for depth.

If we're smart in free-agency, the Hawks have a lot of freedom come draft time. Plus, don't forget Seneca Wallace, trade bait.

by Captain Morgan on Jan 14, 2007 3:04 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Ya its really just sureing up the depth in
multiple positions. Maybe look for another DE and DT but other than that nothing huge.

was Wistrom.  It's hard to tell without looking back at the game, but it seemed he played very solid.

Actually I don't think anyone played a bad game.

on that TD catch? Great effort on that play.

And in other news the Arizona Cardnials have hired Ken Wishenhunt

If Tubbs stays healthy
do you guys think he can be our big run-stopping DT? I think at the time he went out we had only allowed one 100 yard rusher, and that was Chester Taylor in the game he had a 95 yard rush.

not sure
who picked a blow out, most of what I read picked the Seahawks, I know I spent the week convinced the Bears would lose. Great game, its exactly what I expected although I predicted a Brown field goal to win. Now I can take the tags off my Bears coat and actually wear it to work. Looking forward to our next meeting, this is stating to turn into a nice little rivalry.

watching the Pats win made me sick.  Not because they won or anything, but knowing that we could of had that type of celebration.

WOW. Pats at Colts again!

I'm gonna go out on a limb and I'm not a fan of crappy turfs. This is the NFL, if you can't give the players 19 weeks of decent footing just bite the bullet and get a FieldTurf.

by Captain Morgan on Jan 14, 2007 7:58 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

No...
Real football is played on real grass, not the fake stuff. Save that for the AFL.
The so called "crappy turf" is what's been around for ever, and that's part of what makes football great, playing through the elements.
Why do you think the Houston Astros have never won the world series? They invented Astroturf, and until Tampa, Toronto, and Minnesota get rid of it, they are cursed for inventing the horrid stuff

exactly
Of course, if you love grass so much, then why do you want to play on dirt?

I don't know the state of San Diego's field before th bye, but if it was necessary to re-sod it then it was probably in pretty terrible condition.

by Captain Morgan on Jan 14, 2007 9:04 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

clarifying
This is mainly a rant against poor groundskeeping, I prefer grass myself too.

by Captain Morgan on Jan 14, 2007 9:07 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think if you play in Seattle
you have to have Field Turf. Who wants to play in a "slosh bowl" every other week? At least with the artificial turf we won't have to adjust our play to the weather so much.

by John Spartan on Jan 14, 2007 10:20 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Opposing teams...
...hate the Qwest Field crowds, but love the turf.
--Shrug

by Shrug on Jan 14, 2007 8:25 PM PST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

i think its stupid
that teams want to put new sod down before a playoff game, as was the case in both games today. that's just silly. teams have been playing on the crap all season, why change it, even if it does look better. keep with the same, and don't change it. i think it really affected some of the plays, as you saw with the SD kickoff returner slipping on that crucial return late in that game. he could have gone for at least ten more yards.
Shrug runs like a girl.

by stlcardinalsfang on Jan 14, 2007 8:46 PM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

If the turf...
is all beat up, it needs to be replaced so teams aren't playing in a complete mud and sand pit. The turf at Soldier Field has been replaced several times this season to ensure better footing for the players. Turf replacement is necessary more often in the colder climates, where there isn't sun and warmth for it to grow. If San Diego really did replace the turf, I don't know why, because it should have had plenty of time to recover from the bowl games.

Just like after the Sonics '05 run ended
is how I'm feeling today. Yeah, it sucks, but still, they did more than what I thought they were capable of (in the playoffs) and had a decent shot to move on.

#%@#& Patriots. How come they always get the other team to choke? Why did the Chargers stop using LDT? He destroyed them in the first half. Just pointlessly stupid. I hate the Patriots. I hate that Tom Brady, who flat out sucked, will get heaps of praise for being a "winner". Come on Peyton, one time in your life, win the big game.

by Matthew on Jan 15, 2007 8:53 AM PST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

i couldnt agree more
with your comment (the second paragraph anyway). i hate the patriots, and i can't stand tom brady. they always seem to get lucky, and then people praise tom brady because his team got lucky. lucky moment yesterday was when they idiot charger picked off a pass on fourth down and then fumbled it, giving the ball back to brady. that was the turning point of the game, and i knew what was going to happen after that. GOOOOO PEYTON!

If the Patriots beat Dallas
on a botched field goal attempt, everyone would say "they know how to win" and "Tom Brady kept his team in position to win the football game." We do it, and we are "lucky."
