Quick Cap: Seahawks 24 - Rams 19

A bunch of refs just lost money. I'm sorry I can't say that. Seahawks fans aren't allowed to call out poor and biased officiating.

No, though the refs tried their best, Holmgren, Marshall tried their best, the Saint Louis Rams, led by Gus Frerotte, just sucked too hard. It was an ordained win for the Gateway City, three hours of baffling non-penalties, a near 4 to 1 pass to run ratio despite Morris earning nearly 5 yards per carry, and a prevent style defense on the Rams final drive that ceded the first 50 yards. But, somehow, the Hawks talent advantage won out.

Let's run this down before I vomit. The Hawks ran 23 pass plays in the first half, reserving their four runs for such sensible times as, pinned within their 1, 1st and fifteen and the always riotous farce known as 3rd and short. Jim Haslett, like the preteen Maddenite that he is, calls blitz on nearly every play. Surprisingly, drives stall, Hasselbeck is sacked and, not so surprising, I begin doing lines of drain cleaner - as my yay budget can't keep up with Holmgren's boobery. The Hawks enter halftime down 12 points.

Then something miraculous happens: The Hawks defense, so good, so talented, so one piece away from being among the league's elite, shuts out the Rams for the next 27 minutes. Kerney pass rushes like a jihadist hyped on PCP, Mebane flattens the Rams rushing lanes like Brando flattened hookers and the Hawks crawl back into this game, take the lead and shave 6 years off my life. Wait, no, that comes next.

John Marshall loves deep zone coverages. Loves`em. Thinks they have Scarlett Johansson's tits and J-Lo's ass. After a contest that forced Seattle to respect the rush, keep a safety shallow and - God forbid - the corners in man coverage, Marshall was sprouting new hair seeing that Seattle could drop into prevent against the Rams' final drive. Like usual, it worked like a charm. The Rams picked up 19 yards on back to back plays, sent Holt deep, and then watched the officials call pass interference for what might politely be called incidental contact. I'm not entirely certain what pass interference is, but if Grant and Holt briefly touching hands qualifies, I think every offense is soon going to look like the Pats. Enough of that.

So, predictably, the Rams drive into their red zone, but what happens, on fourth down, a completely unforced fumble?!?

The Hawks did not deserve to win this game. The Hawks defense deserved to win it twice, but the Hawks on the whole did not. From Nate Burleson, who's equally talented and lazy, to Holmgren and Marshall, each in turn attempted to run this team into the ground. But the Hawks did win and no matter how, that's something.

Waking up at 4 in the morning today I remember seeing a piece on Chucky the year he led the Bucs to the Super Bowl. It talked about how he woke up at 3 each morning constructing his master plan. It's dog's work being a coach; you work 7 days, 70+ hours a week, but the pay's nice. The Hawks three major coaches, Holmgren, Marshall and Gil Haskell are a combined 185 years old. No one would blame them if they didn't want to dedicate the time it takes to be a NFL coach, but, please, delegate your duties to someone who does. This team is talented, but old in some very essential positions. We should be talking about a playoff run, instead I'm dreading January. All I can say about the Hawks chances in the playoffs is that I'm very disappointed and terrified.

Game Ball: Who else? "The Jowler" Patrick Kerney with his second straight 3 sack, forced fumble game. Kerney never had a ton of help in Atlanta, now healthy, driven and only one part in a dominant pass rush, he's showing that Tim Ruskell is smarter than me. I love seeing him do it.

On Wednesday I'll probably sit down and realize we didn't deserve this one, but as of right now I'll take a W anyway we can.

Hey, even you said a win would be enough! (Does this count as a win?? lol)

7-4, in great position to make the playoffs and get a home playoff game.  An honestly I don't think we're beating Green Bay or Dallas no matter how well we play.

Josh Brown is better than you. The Rest of the team is worse.

Green Bay really isn't
that good. They have a great quaterback in Farve and a great cornerback in Harris and that's about it.

They have more than that, but the Hawks could beat
them. I don't know about the Boys, but the Hawks, well coached, at full health, could beat any other NFC team.

by John Morgan on Nov 25, 2007 2:14 PM PST up reply actions

I disagree
The Packers are really good.  They can even run the ball well when they want to.

We aren't going to into Green Bay and winning in the divisional round, but in our defense no one is.

Josh Brown is better than you. The Rest of the team is worse.

They can run the ball
because of their passing game.

Better to be a Hawks fan than a Giants fan
and 17-14 niners leading the Cards.

Not that it will hold up.

Room for positive improvement
I wish I could see the DVOA split for this game by half. It feels like the Hawks are showing flashes of what it takes to go deep into the playoffs, the issue is just doing that the whole game.
formerly captain morgan

by Will Kier on Nov 25, 2007 2:24 PM PST reply actions

all guessing here
But I assume the 1st half DVOA is going to be ugly and the 2nd half slightly above average.  The Offense will likely drop to 18th or 19th overall, defense might go up slightly or stay the same.  Not sure about special teams - the kick returns help, but missed field goals and a fumble really hurts.

Seattle probably stays close to 10th overall, thanks to a massive Giants meltdown.

That piece your refering to
A new defensive coordinater, and a Russell upgrade wouldnt hurt either, hes almost as bad as jennings when it comes to open field tackles

Trufant's really good,
the rest of them? Meh. We'll see how they matchup against a real receiver.

well...
jennings was fantastic vs. holt today.  that's pretty good, right?  Even babs is decent; and behind him we have wilson.  We're fine.

by dlinsley on Nov 25, 2007 2:38 PM PST up reply actions

Jennings doesn't really have the "big-play" ability, but he's a solid "young!!" cover corner.  Babs blows, but I've been impressed with Wilson.

They could use a dime back maybe, but they just pick up a random Kelly Herndon type for that.

Josh Brown is better than you. The Rest of the team is worse.

by MFAN on Nov 25, 2007 2:39 PM PST up reply actions

Kelly Herndon?
Ugh.

by Coach Owens on Nov 25, 2007 2:42 PM PST up reply actions

I'm not saying "Bring back Herndon!!"
I'm just saying Seattle corner needs are minimal.  They can fill their hole with some random veteran.

by MFAN on Nov 25, 2007 2:43 PM PST up reply actions

I dont mind
Babs as a dime back, just think hes overused in the nickel, hes certainly as good as the filler we could get

by armedpp on Nov 25, 2007 2:45 PM PST up reply actions

The Hawks need a corner
Like the M's need a Third Baseman.

by NB on Nov 25, 2007 2:40 PM PST up reply actions

Yea
keep in mind our corners other then tru and babs are first and second year top draft picks respectively, and they look to be pretty good, torry holt doesnt qualify as a real reciever? I know hes not All pro anymore, but the guy still has some skills

He's not great.

go
ahead and name 5 better recievers in the NFC

by armedpp on Nov 25, 2007 2:41 PM PST up reply actions

ok
thats a stretch i can name 5, but not much more then that, hes still better then most jennings will have to deal with

Driver, Steve Smith... Give me a minute. Branch and Engram. There's 5.

receivers in the NFC, so I did.

I'll take a crack.
Donald Driver, Steve Smith, Greg Jennings, Deion Branch, Anquan Boldin, Larry Fitzgerald, Bernard Berrian, Plaxico Burress, Terrell Owens, Calvin Johnson, and Roy Williams.

There's eleven that are at least as good.

by BrettJMiller on Nov 25, 2007 8:15 PM PST up reply actions

I'm not going to disagree
on most of those except berrian and jennings, but the numbers only support Driver, TO and Fitzgerald.

Why does coach ever open his mouth?
We didn't deserve the win but like John said our defense won this game twice. Holmy got way to pass happy especially against a non stop blitzing defense.

This is why I love the game though so I'll take it

Hasselbeck
I'm worried about him.  Over at the News Tribune blog, they're saying Beck was puking after the game.  That guy has been a huge stud over the past two games, and really through most all of the season.  He is bearing the burden of this pass-dependent scheme of the Seahawks.

Holmgren must make adjustments for Philadelphia, or the Seahawks will lose that game and possibly their QB.

I do not understand this: when the 'Hawks could not run the ball worth a damn when Alexander was the RB, Holmgren stuck to some semblance of balance between run and pass.  Now that Morris is having GREATER success running the ball, Holmgren tells the entire league that he is going to pass on almost every down, and proceeds to do just that.  The result?  A puking QB.

by jeager on Nov 25, 2007 4:32 PM PST reply actions

by wadswerth on Nov 25, 2007 9:11 PM PST reply actions

I wonder how close this game would've been
if the refs had called it balanced though. I think the Hawks earned the win. Pretty hard to get any pass rush when the Rams O-Line is allowed to hold on at least 3 consecutive plays and the Rams D-Line is allowed to rip the helmets off our O-Linemen and throw them downfield.

Here to eat some crow...
I was very critical of the Kerney signing this offseason, but I've never been so happy to have been  wrong. Between the number of QB pressures he was racking up early season, to his all-out sack frenzy as of late, he's becoming one of my favorite players on the defense. Check out Kerney's last three games:

14 tackles, 7 sacks, 1 stuff, 3 FF, 1 INT, 2 PD

Defensive player of the month?

I reject your reality and substitute my own!
