Game Day Open Thread - Week 14: Arizona at Seattle

at
December 9, 1:00pm Pacific
Qwest Field
FOX

Not much to wonder about here. If we win, the Seahawks capture their fourth straight NFC West title. No questions asked.

If we lose, then the open sore remains festering until the end of the season. We grip the armrests of our favorite chairs and wonder why we couldn't have wrapped this up sooner. We agonize about Kurt Warner and, for God's sake, THE EDGE (not the U2 guitarist) stealing our thunder from underneath us while Boldin and Fitzgerald were 50% at best. Then, as is usual, our traditional civic self-doubt creeps in. We go fumbling in the dark for our identity but we can't find it for another five weeks, when we just by chance happen to locate it underneath the loveseat after we finally get around to cleaning our apartments after the big New Year's Eve party we had. And instead of maintaining the momentum of a rather incredible 5-game winning streak, we plunge into the depths of despair, from which we cannot emerge until the Mariners enter another spring training with absolutely nothing to show from the winter meetings, and we just resolve to spend another year drinking microbrews into oblivion and continuing a string of one-night stands with women we'll never see again until they've married promising lawyers and want to rub it in our faces.

So as you can see this is a big game.

good rant
Didn't you have one last year about how the Cards were a wussy mascot? It went something like "Cardinals are songbirds. What's the worst they can do to you, write a strongly-worded press release?"
formerly captain morgan

by Will Kier on Dec 9, 2007 1:35 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Thank you.
I did indeed write that. Although this year's Cards seem like they could live up to the promise of years past. Let's just hope we can delay it a little.

My main contention with the Cards last year is that they re-did their mascot's beak and eyebrows so it looked more threatening. Ahem -- which team from the Pacific Northwest did that first? Oh, yes, that's right!

Say what you will. Our mascot will not be out-scowled.

Just for clarification...
If the Hawks win, can I still drink myself into oblivion?
-aaron c.

by acblue on Dec 9, 2007 2:52 AM PST reply actions   0 recs

Yes.
You may drink yourself silly. It just won't be for the same reason Bukowski drank himself silly. Or why Soviet Russia did.

I wouldn't describe a drunk Bukowski as silly.
Maybe drank himself "surly", or "surlier".

Speaking of which, I have to stop having nights like:

+

+

+

And yet, I wake up after a few hours and feel great. I guess I haven't entirely shed the "Top Fuel Dragster" label from my youth. Then again, I drank ,,,,,,,,, when i tripped to Seattle and felt like George Foreman had been working on my kidneys all night the next day.

Am I still typing? Oh, there comes the hangover, ah yes...

Oof, I hear ya
I'm doing surprisingly well considering my 10+ PBR intake last night.  Especially since I only slept for about 6 hours.

Now I've got that weird thing, where you wake up after a night of drinking and you're all disoriented, but you can't really sleep.  Does that happen to everyone else?  It doesn't happen to me all the time, just once in a while.  Odd odd odd.

Let's go Hawks!

I always woke up incredily refreshed
after a night of drinking. I would hit the bed at like 3 or 4am, grab a pint of water just beforehand and I would end up waking up at around 9am totally awake and feeling great.

Either that or I would get the Hangover for Hell. Kinda hit or miss.

Looking forward to getting home to watch a bit of non-Hawks ball before the main event, and I get Oakland and Green Bay.  Bad for a couple reasons: (1) Oakland is miserable; and (2) I hate rooting for Oakland.

Also, please go Philly.

That's probably it, not sure I love that specific playcall, but I can't fault Mike for handing him the ball there if he's not just going to flat bench the dude.

That said, I hate hate hate running the ball there.

Got worked on that 2nd down SA rush.  Not all Shaun's fault.  Hope John's question re this being Gray's retirement party doesn't get answered in the positive.

First Half Cap
I tell you what, this is what I want you to do. Go out during the half, grab some good beer. I suggest anything by North Coast, Stone or Deschutes. Inversion IPA can be found at most grocery stores. You get home, you sit down, crack a beer or three, enjoy the rest of the game, enjoy the NFC West title, and hope the Giants earn the 3rd seed. The rest of the season is gravy. It's playoff time, baby.

by John Morgan on Dec 9, 2007 2:34 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

IPA
As a Bend resident, I am (sometimes painfully) familiar with the joys of Inversion.  Today, I am drinking Terminal Gravity IPA from the brewery of that name in Enterprise, OR.  Probably not widely available west of the Cascades, but it is sublime.

More to the substance, don't we want the third seed?

by jeager on Dec 9, 2007 2:37 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

how can the giants get the third seed?
the cowboys just clinched the division today and division winners are always ranked first.

thus, the highest seed the giants could get would be fifth.

Rest of GB games all in NFC
Green Bay has to go 1-2 over next three games and the Seahawks have to win out for the teams to both be 12-4. GB's conference record will be 8-4, ours will be 10-2, we take the #2 seed.

touchdown.

So I guess the conclusion is Marcus Trufant has priced himself out of Seattle, while Josh Brown has become much more affordable?

Sports and Bremertonians. Because we can.

He can't be priced out of Seattle.
Not only could they franchise him, but they're in great cap shape.

This experiment is over.

Stutz
basically he's cut now right, like it's an upset if he makes it 24 hours.

by Dids on Dec 9, 2007 4:04 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

Boone Stutz should be the most hated Seahawk
And Tim Ruskell should feel like a dumbass for getting rid of J.P Darche and whatshisface.

Yeah, but in the big picture Kerney's signing > Long Snapper's signing.

was I the only one
that expected Brown to somehow pull some magic and get the 2-points?

I heard
the scout team has been looking at punters and snappers all week. Hopefully, there was someone better than this ass clown.

Russel's RAC is pretty sick
That's like 11 yards of Card gainage while in his hands.

Up by a few, sure complain
Up by four touchdowns, who cares?
DAMNIT!

draft
Anyone think JJ Arrington will amount to anything in the NFL?  All I could think when the Cards signed Edgerrin was that I'd be really pissed if I was JJ.

On that last interception play
I knew they weren't going to call a single penalty from about the 3 minute point on because the game was a joke and nobody cares, but Jesus did Mebane get a manly hug from behind and a reacharound for good measure while Warner was looking for a wide open Trufant again...
DAMNIT!

four straight
This is a nice run, four div titles and all.

Next step: hope Seattle runs the table and Green Bay slips up so the Seahawks can get a first-round bye.  Likely?  No.  Mathematically possible?  Yes.

Sports and Bremertonians. Because we can.
