Question:
Why is snap yardage factored in when figuring field goal length, but not for punts?

I figure it's just because when they defined the..
stats it was easier to figure out exactly where a FG was kicked from than a punt because the holder is static while the punter is moving.

First Half Cap:
The Hawks come out looking very flat, especially rushing the passer, but ten points is not much of a lead.

Three Things to Consider

  1. Alexander looks slow and hesitant. Blame his age, his foot or his wrist but Seattle must start spreading the ball around. Leonard Weaver and Alvin Pearman deserve looks rushing and receiving in the second half. Unfortunately, the Hawks rushing problems don't fall all on Alabama. Clancy Pendergast has correctly called rush or pass on almost every play, resulting in lots of stuffed rushing attempts and two coverage sacks. Seattle needs to be able to get into better down and distance situations, if they do I fully expect their rushing and passing attack to come back to life.
  2. The Hawks are clearly confused defensively. For whatever reason, Whisenhunt's crap gives John Marshall's attacking defense fits. Most likely it's Whizzie's creative blocking formations, and Matt Leinart's poise. After a game where pressure led to Jeff Garcia fleeing the pocket again and again, Leinart looks like the veteran, sticking in the pocket and never taking his eyes from down field. For Seattle's defense to be productive in the second half they must convert first tackles against James. They must convert pass rush into sacks. And the must stop biting on play fakes again and again. It's only going to get harder in the second half, with a lead and 30 minutes worth of tape expect some trick plays.
  3. The strength versus strength matchup between Patrick Kerney and Levi Brown has clearly favored Brown thus far. Kerney simply lacks the speed to effectively edge rush. The Hawks must try and compensate. I still don't believe in Brown's quickness and think an overload blitz, a nickel blitz, or a zone blitz with outside pressure could cause havoc.
Seattle is far from out of this game, but unlike when they were behind against the Bucs, they are being outplayed. Now is the time for adjustments. The offensive playcalling needs to become less predictable. The downfield pass/burned down must be scrapped. The Hawks need to go back to the efficient dink and dunk attack that let them get into favorable down and distance against Tampa Bay. Seattle is still the better team, but right now, they're being outcoached. Adjust, man up, the Hawks have thirty minutes to take this--it's starts with Arizona's first possession.

weird
That was kind of a weird sequence because first I got the impression that the Seahawks had too many yards to go and a five-yard facemask penalty wouldn't get them the first-down yardage on that third-down play.  Then someone reminded the ref that they had to replay the down.  So then it was 3rd-and-9 and the pass play went to Engram.

Two-minute muthaf#&*in' warning!

I have to say, unless something horribly catastrophic happens here, I like where this is going.

This is so over.  Well within Rackers' range.

I said the one earlier was a cinch and he missed it, but this one is a cinch.

It's not in the cards today, pardon the pun.

by MFAN on Sep 16, 2007 4:04 PM PDT reply actions

worst part...
I do a one-week ESPN moratorium whenever the Seahawks lose, especially this week because Sean Salisbury picked them to lose.  Of course, Salisbury probably picked the Saints to go real far too.
Sports and Bremertonians. Because we can.

by wackomann on Sep 16, 2007 4:04 PM PDT reply actions

shit, your right
now we have to listen to Salisbury talk about how this team doesn't have the makeup to win.

He's hated us ever since he picked us to win it all in 2004, and we sucked.

Josh Brown is better than you.

Fuck this.
I hate the Cardinals, I hate Shaun Alexander, I hate the Seahawks defense, I hate Neil Rackers, I hate University of Phoenix stadium, I hate Holmgren's play calling.

The better team lost
Although it would have been nice to have played the first 25 minutes of the game like we played the 33 minutes that followed.

I at least have little expectations from them

by kentroyals5 on Sep 16, 2007 4:06 PM PDT reply actions

sonics are dead to me
Go Canucks Go.

The best part is, they take up the same months basketball does, and they'll fill your week since the Seahawks only play once a week.  It's great.

Sports and Bremertonians. Because we can.

I'm watched on a grainy internet feed...I need to
know who's fault the fumble was...I'm thinking SA.

by Harrison @ Field Gulls on Sep 16, 2007 4:06 PM PDT reply actions

dude, where's my run defense?
That was just God-awful.  Did they put that much stock in Marcus Tubbs being healthy in preseason?  If they did, they could be screwed for the rest of the year unless someone really steps up.  I still won't believe Arizona has an offensive line of any worth, so how does James rush for 127 yards?
Sports and Bremertonians. Because we can.

by MFAN on Sep 16, 2007 4:12 PM PDT up reply actions

ugh
I want to know why "run it up the middle for 1 yard" kept being called in the 1st half. Shaun finally started getting yards in the 2nd, but until it does work, why not go for the stretch play to the sidelines?

In the end, though, this pretty clearly should have been a 23-20 Seahawks win. While it's tough to win when you're down by 17, I liked that the Hawks stayed in there.

And that second 4th and 1 where we opted to take the FG rather then go for it? I knew that might come back to bite us.

Shaun Alexander will thank god
for giving him the ability and opportunity to suck balls today.

by kentroyals5 on Sep 16, 2007 4:13 PM PDT reply actions

screw football for the night
Only football I'll deal with is the night game on radio.  Dave Sims and Bob Trumpy are the #1 Westwood One crew on Sunday nights, by the way.

Hell, I might not watch SportsCenter for the week.  That's not unusual for me, by the way.  It's not like I'll have any reason to watch it.  The Mariners are dead and ESPN has completely disowned hockey, so it won't be hard.

Sports and Bremertonians. Because we can.

by wackomann on Sep 16, 2007 4:13 PM PDT reply actions

simply
In a game were both teams played 30 minutes of football each, the home team won.

Sure, it's not that simple, but it's something to consider.

It's sad when the only thing you can hang your hat on is that the Seahawks played 30 minutes of football and still nearly beat an Arizona team on the road.

Who am I kidding?  This sucks and everyone knows it.

Sports and Bremertonians. Because we can.
