Game Day Open Thread - Wild Card Playoff: Washington at Seattle

at
January 5, 1:30pm Pacific
Qwest Field
NBC

The Seahawks start their fifth consecutive postseason against America's sentimental favorite team. There will be weather.

Commentary here and at our Redskins blog, Hogs Haven (who were one of Field Gulls' earliest supporters and enthusiasts in the SB Nation, so try not to get too personal with 'em).

You know the drill, 12th Man.

Frank Hughes is reporting that Deion Branch is Out.

HAWKS ROOL REDSKINS DROOL

SEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWKKKKKKKKKKKKKSSSSSSSSS

That there remains a pro team in our nation's capital with the name Redskins and that logo is astounding to me.

by Matthew on Jan 5, 2008 12:46 AM PST   0 recs

logo
What's wrong with the logo?  It's not a caricature.

Let's hope for a performance that we're expecting
Not the Seahawks that randomly fall in a coma.

I think their problem is they don't focus for "should win" games.  They seem to step it up for big games.  Let's hope they do it tomorrow.

SEA! HAWKS!

by BrettJMiller on Jan 5, 2008 1:18 AM PST   0 recs

I think you're exactly right.
Somehow, these guys came within an overtime of making it to the NFC Championship last year. I think they're best when they got something to prove. Remember how everyone picked Carolina to beat us in '06...

Good Luck Seattle
We could really shut some people up here, this could be a statement game heading into next round. I hope we do what our team is capable of  here.

Alexander needs to prove himself here, if he doesn't run as hard as he's ever run in this game, i think his reputation might take a hit that it can't recover from.

Let's go.

by J Hens on Jan 5, 2008 4:56 AM PST   0 recs

Who couldn't sleep?
I really, honestly, want to see a blowout.

Oh, and Hawks fans, fear this guy:

I don't know how he does it, but man does he tear up zones like nobody's business.

he's an excellent route runner
cooley is an excellent route runner. but the other thing, reminiscent of mike martz's rams, is that gibbs loves max pro. he leaves his tight ends in to block so much you ignore them in your coverage schemes. you start leaving the middle of the field open and cooley gets open for big, big plays. brandon manumaleuna used to gash us that same way back in the days of mike martz's rams. gibbs and martz, while on the surface they have diametrically opposed offensive schemes, both come from that sid gillman/don coryell coaching tree.

Well said.
I think that's exactly correct. Also, I just don't think most teams know how/have much experience playing against an H-Back.

H-back
Gibbs got rid of the H-back position two years ago when Al Saunders came in.  Cooley now plays as a traditional tight end.

by Skinsmaniac on Jan 5, 2008 11:39 AM PST to parent up   0 recs

I hope we start out on defense today
I'd love to begin the game with our defense on the field, the crowd going bonkers, a quick 3-and-out, and then get the ball first in the third quarter.

The Washington Post sucks
Calls the Hawks defense the worst in the NFL. The whole article infuriated me. The link is on MSNBC sports. Don't read it. Will just piss you off.

Wow
They really said the Hawks defense was the worst in the NFL?

Well, I guess when your team is in the playoffs, all logic goes out the window, and pride overtakes lol. I just didn't know it went all the way to professional newspapers.

Let's go.

by J Hens on Jan 5, 2008 11:00 AM PST to parent up   0 recs

it's funny that
every NFC East team tells us how horribly we'd do in a "real" division, yet they all never mention that the Seahawks are 7-0 against the NFC East since that overtime loss @ Washington in early '05.

by Will Kier on Jan 5, 2008 11:19 AM PST to parent up   0 recs

I think the Seahawks
should post Seller's comment on the board...say, 5 minutes before the game.

Well...
More Engram, more Hackett, and more Burleson. The report from Danny O'Neil from the Times says James Thrash is out, as well as Omar Stoutmire.
Bring on the Redskins!

Good thing we have a TV that I can watch here though. Everybody else here is wearing their shirts and ties. I'm sporty Muscley Arms' big #59.

HALF HOUR!
I'M PUMPED!
wish I was home drinking though. Beer and foot ball go so great together for me. I lobbied for Sunday's off when I took this job 2 months ago so that I could catch all the games, and the NFL puts us on a Saturday. Piss...

by tootthekazoo on Jan 5, 2008 1:01 PM PST   0 recs

Same here.
And I work down the hall from a bar packed with people getting ready to watch the game, so all day long I'll be hearing them whoop it up. Lame.

If the Hawks win I'm finding some way to get next Saturday off.

The crappy thing about working during a game...
Is that no one cares that you have to miss the game.  I work in a video store, so anyone that comes in has no interest in the Seahawks, so I can't really bitch to anyone.
-aaron c.

by acblue on Jan 5, 2008 1:25 PM PST to parent up   0 recs

Final Thoughts.
Deion Branch is out, but, luckily, Tyler Durden is in. That's encouraging.

A couple bold predictions: The Hawks defense arrives today. If the Hawks get an early lead, they can crush the Skins. The only thing that scares me is if the Hawks' O sputters and they allow the Skins to stay in the game. Any team can suffer a close loss. Any team.

I'm so excited that I've been forced to drink to calm my nerves. Shoot this worked in week one:

Sea!

Hawks!

by John Morgan on Jan 5, 2008 1:20 PM PST   0 recs

NBC's interview with Coach Holmgren:
Coach, do you feel like you have nothing to play for since Sean Taylor was not on your team?

Coach, Sean Taylor's teammates feel like Sean Taylor inspires them to play every game for Sean Taylor.  What do you have to say to that?

Coach, God took Sean Taylor as a test of faith.  Why do you hate God?

Coach, it's generally accepted that the fact the Seahawks are playing against Sean Taylor's team makes you Satan incarnate.  Do you agree or do you not disagree with this statement?

Is a silly, over romantic baseball writer.  His stupid football article has me on life tilt.  Nationally, so few people understand the strength of our D.  (or the complexion and weaknesses of our offense)

I will be very surprised if the 'Skins put up close to 20 on our defense.

Olberman said in the pre-game, (prapharse) 'if your team isn't in the playoffs, you gotta root for the Redskins.'  Why?  I hate the freakin redskins and I don't give a crap about Sean Taylor.  Some thug gets killed and I should care?

F THAT!  GO HAWKS!!!

The first part I agree with.
Insulting a guy for a random shooting is callous + ignorant. I'm not saying it's a tragedy, let's keep things in perspective. The Tsunami is a tragedy. But I don't see the point of ripping the deceased.
