Regarding the idea that change implies improvement...

Star-divide

Who was the Giants big name free agent acquisition last offseason?

How about the Colts in 2006?

Steelers `05?

Regarding the idea that staying the same..
implies improvement...= by definition insane. (same thing, expect different results, etc..)

So =P

Doesn't apply to sports.
Players improve/decline from year to year and luck plays a pretty major part too.

Besides..
Colts in 2006 added Addai and traded a 2nd round pick for Booger McFarland, makes it kind of a bad example.

Draft, trade, retaining difference makers on one's
own roster, but not free agency. Free agency is the most overblown portion of the offseason. Simply having younger players on the roster improve generally makes more of a difference than adding a post-prime vet. I'm not saying that's always the case, I'm just saying that activity doesn't imply improvement.

Indeed
To wit, see Washington Redskins in the Dan Snider era.

We lucked out with Kerney last year, but I think that kind of production from a free agent is an outlier.

true, but don't forget.....
Indy, Pittsburgh, and NE were 1, 2, and 3 in DVOA the years before they won the Super Bowl (Pats '03). Then they kept that high-level roster and went on to win it all the next year.

The lesson being
Don't let your star guards get taken away by poison pill transition tag contracts.
DAMNIT!
