Seahawks Sign Mare

At least that's what is being reported.

http://www.profootballtalk.com/2008/03/27/seahawks-to-add-mare/

Mare was good on kickoffs and poor on FG. But like John said "field goal percentage is a poor measure of a kicker".

Update: Look at it like this: In his first 5 seasons Brown kicked 145 field goal attempts and converted 116. He's been 80% accurate. In Mare's first 5 season he kicked 161 field goal attempts and converted 136. He was 84.5% accurate. After that Mare had 3 straight seasons where he didn't top 80%. Now, did Mare get worse or did the larger sample size simply give us a better idea of Mare's true ability? Meanwhile, Brown has kicked 417 kickoffs. He averages 62.5 yards and kicks a touchback once every 11.1 attempts. Mare has 774 kickoffs. His career average is 63.9 yards with a touchback every 4.5 attempts. In the last 6 seasons, 392 attempts, Mare has been even better. He's averaged 65.1 yards per attempt and a touchback once every 3.8 attempts. That's something you can hold your hat on.

I guess you have a point

He only made 58.8% of his field goals last season, but that was only on 17 attempts.  His worst year prior that was two years ago with 72.2% completion, and every year prior over the course of his career he's hit over 75% of them.  So I think it's safe to chalk last year up to an abberation from a small sample size.

Jesus.
A touchback every 3.8 attempts? That's awesomely awesome.

For that to happen
the Rams would need to be able to keep it close . . .

Norm Johnson is selling real estate in the area
On another note, I'd think the 'hawks will probably bring in a 7th rounder, or a free agent kicker to compete, competition will be good for him.  Also with a shakey long snapper, we have seen how bad Josh Brown was.  Is there any information on Mare's LS and Holder when he was good compared to when he was bad?

home field advantage?
I'm surprised John Morgan didn't put Mare's recent statistics in line with the fact he was kicking half of his games in the Superdome instead of Qwest. I assume that park affect does go into kickoff length, at least for this past year. Not to say the basic premise of kicker evaluation listed here is incorrect, but I would assume Mare's numbers on length to decrease somewhat.

Domes do matter.
But we're talking about 24 kickoffs in the Superdome total. Including his worst performance of the season against the Rams playing through injuries (5 KOs/44.6 yards average). I considered using FO's weather and return team adjusted metrics, but then we're more evaluating the entire kick return team unit and less the kicker. Considering all options, I thought isolating kickoff length and TB ratio provided the most accurate portrait of Mare.

Seems optimistic...
I remember when Mare was a pretty darn good kicker, I'm not sure that is still the case. I agree with the small sample size and also agree that using FO's stats don't provide a good picture. I think Mare will be passable, but hold out hope that we'll draft a young kicker and move forward with him similar to Josh Brown.
