I love the last two or three days of breaking news. First, on Monday, Adam Schefter 'reported' on NFL Live that at this point in time, it's becoming very unlikely that Matt Hasselbeck will return to the Seahawks once free agency starts. On Tuesday, Adam Schefter 'reported' that its now more likely than ever that Matt Hasselbeck will be back with the Seahawks.

Apparently all this speculation stems from the idea that allegedly Darrell Bevell (and 2 other coaches according to Brock Huard) called Matt Hasselbeck during the short lifting of the lockout. Ostensibly to beg him to return I guess? Maybe they were nailing down last minute details on where they were going to meet for that pickup basketball game. Who knows. None of this is news. Over the last month or so we've heard Matt wants to be back, Seattle wants him back, Matt probably won't be back, Seattle probably doesn't want him back, Matt jokes around on Twitter, and people all speculate about the Da Vinci codes he's releasing in his tweets about 'playbooks' and 'his children'.

Here's the deal. Matt Hasselbeck is still very much in play for the Seahawks (per logic, Rob Staton's source, and the fact that the Seahawks have one QB on their roster). However, the odds of him returning are VERY MUCH DEPENDENT ON OTHER THINGS HAPPENING. Namely, the lockout ending. After that? Are we trading for Carson Palmer, CAN we trade for Carson Palmer? After that, are we going to trade for Kevin Kolb and at what cost? Matt Hasselbeck will be back after all the scenarios are actually on the table and the Seahawks can legally make some decisions. They are going to explore their options and decide which option brings them the most value at the quarterback position.

It might be Matt Hasselbeck. It might not be. We won't know until the lockout is lifted, but the Matt Hasselbeck option has NEVER left the table. I think, probably. Actually I don't know. But none of this matters until an actual decision can be made.

For Field Gulls, I'm Danny Kelly. Back to you Adam.
