Coffee & Cigarettes: Seahawks links for Monday

Not a bad Monday, if you ask me.

Sherman’s hearing could be pushed back from December 14 | ProFootballTalk
The overriding problem for Sherman is that the current procedures for PED appeals make it very hard for any player to win. Although proof of irregularities in the testing process could exonerate Sherman, there’s no way (we’re told) to force the league to share any information that the league chooses not to share. As one source said in connection with Browner’s decision to bail on his appeal, these cases aren’t lost at the hearing stage but at the bargaining table. The message for the NFLPA? If/when the HGH testing issue is ever resolved, the union should insist on changes to the appeal mechanism that will ensure a fair shake for players whose urine samples result in a false positive or that are otherwise tainted by defects in the collection process.

That was like watching a heavily one-sided boxing match. Unfortunately, nobody could throw in the towel for the Arizona Cardinals. Seattle moves to 8-5, remains in the NFC West title race and most importantly came away unscathed. They also scored 58 points in the process. It was an early Christmas gift from a pathetic Cardinals outfit.

Brandon Mebane has moved from the three-technique tackle spot to the nose this season, but he remains a key to the success the Seahawks’ run defense is having.

Seahawks win in a romp
The Seahawks upped their record to 8-5 and moved into the No. 1 wild-card spot in the NFC in convincing fashion on Sunday with a 51-0 rout of the Cardinals at CenturyLink Field.

Quick Hits: Seahawks rout Cardinals 58-0 - Blog -
The lead. The Seahawks improved to 8-5 with an absolutely dominant performance against the lowly Cardinals, forcing eight turnovers and scoring in seemingly every way imaginable. Seattle's 58 points broke the franchise record of 56, set in 1977 against Buffalo. The win ensures the Seahawks at least a .500 regular season for the first time under coach Pete Carroll. More importantly, it strengthens the Seahawks' hold on a playoff spot. Seattle remains a game and a half back in the NFC West standings as San Francisco beat Miami.

Rapid Reaction: Seahawks 58, Cardinals 0 - NFC West Blog - ESPN
What it means: Seattle improved its playoff chances by improving to 8-5 in impressive fashion. The Cardinals played their worst game of the season and one of their worst ever in falling to 4-9 following a 4-0 start. Eight Arizona turnovers turned this game into a joke. Cardinals ownership surely wasn't laughing. It's tougher to envision coach Ken Whisenhunt holding on to his job after a debacle of this magnitude. This was the most lopsided defeat in Cardinals history and within one point of the largest shutout since 1940 (which happened twice).

Wrap-up: 49ers 27, Dolphins 13 - NFC West Blog - ESPN
The 49ers improved to 9-3-1, maintaining their lead in the NFC West on a day when Seattle (on its way to 8-5) was winning big and St. Louis (6-6-1) also won. That was critical for San Francisco as the team heads into more difficult road games against New England and the Seahawks.

Wrap-up: Rams 15, Bills 12 - NFC West Blog - ESPN
The Rams have won three consecutive games for the first time since 2006. Quarterback Sam Bradford enhanced his already strong fourth-quarter credentials with a game-winning drive featuring outstanding plays from his receiving targets as well. St. Louis improved to 6-6-1 and kept itself alive in the NFC playoff picture. This was a huge road victory for the Rams, who had gone 1-6 outside the NFC West before Sunday. The defense deserves credit for hanging tough and keeping the Bills' scoring down without enough help for most of the game.

Transcript of Pete Carroll’s postgame press conference | Seahawks Insider
We had, obviously, a very good day today, and it was actually a reward to the players for working so hard and executing well in this game. All phases gave us a great chance to have a heck of a day. The turnovers were the story. You have to do well when you get eight. We took advantage of the score. Richard’s play, and then we score on a mishandled punt. Just a lot of good stuff. I love that we ran for 280 yards today and did not have to throw the football very much and just didn’t need to. We took care of the field position opportunities, we didn’t get all touchdowns, but we scored. It was a very solid day, fans were great, place was crazy. I am glad for them to have a chance to see a game like that and have fun with it. We enjoyed it all.

The Pistol usually is used in conjunction with the zone read. The formation lends itself to unpredictability. "There are so many options to it," he NFC coach said. "If you are in true Pistol with one back behind the quarterback and one to the side, your first option is dive the offset back. The second option is you can run a true option where the quarterback can keep or pitch. And then you can run a play action pass off that. "You can run lead plays, counter plays, split action, all the action. It’s not like you’re locked into running a zone read scheme. Or if you have just one back behind the quarterback, you can run inside zone, or outside zone from that formation. You can run a conventional offense out of it."

Whisenhunt-for-Horton swap could be coming | ProFootballTalk
According to Mike Jurecki of XTRA 910 in Phoenix, the Cardinals were having "internal discussions" about defensive coordinator Ray Horton on Monday, after Arizona’s eighth straight loss. The thinking was that the Cardinals were assessing whether coach Ken Whisenhunt should be fired after the season and replaced immediately with Horton, given the possibility that Horton will be in demand elsewhere as a head-coaching candidate.

Larry Fitzgerald, innocent bystander
In the preseason, I wrote a post showing what percentage of each receiver’s receiving yards came from each of their quarterbacks. Using that same methodology, here’s an updated look at the quarterbacks responsible for Larry Fitzgerald’s career numbers entering week 14. The second receiving yards column (and second games column) shows the percentage of Fitzgerald’s receiving yards came (and games) that came from that quarterback:1
