NFL Draft Results 2012: Seahawks Select RB Robert Turbin With First 4th Round Pick

New, comments

With the 10th pick of the 4th round, 106th overall, the Seattle Seahawks have selected running back Robert Turbin out of Utah State. Turbin is a big, powerful back at 5'10", 225 pounds but has a speed element to his game. He surprised some people by running a 4.43 at the Combine to go with his 36" vert and 10'2" broadjump.

He was WAC Offensive Player of the Year in 2011 while rusing for 1,517 yards and 19 TDs, while adding 17 receptions for 171 yards and 4 TDs. He's a between the tackles runner with good vision and some patience to find the crease, attributes that are important in the Seahawks' zone scheme. He has surprisingly soft hands in the passing game and can make plays in the open field with the ball in his hand.

This answers the question that I've had for a while - do the Seahawks want a complementary back to slice and dice the defense and spell Marshawn Lynch, or do they want a guy that they can rely on to back up Lynch and play the lead-back role if Lynch gets hurt? I had kind of figured that the Seahawks were leaning toward the latter and it looks like that's the case - Turbin is an all-around back that will wear down defenses and keep the pile moving forward in short yardage situations and will provide a nice one-two punch with Lynch in the Hawks' power run game.
