The Seahawks have officially trimmed their roster to 53 players, waiving DB Phillip Adams, DE Pierre Allen, LB Allen Bradford, WR Deon Butler, WR Kris Durham, T/G Paul Fanaika, G Rishaw Johnson, WR Jermaine Kearse, LB Kyle Knox, DE Cordarro Law, WR Ricardo Lockette, TE Sean McGrath, C Kris O'Dowd, QB Josh Portis, DB DeShawn Shead, LB Korey Toomer, and WR Lavasier Tuinei. Cooper Helfet and Vai Taua were waived/injured, and Matt McCoy was placed on the injured reserve. Pep Levingston was given an injury settlement after being waived. Allen Barbre was placed on the suspended list.
James Carpenter was taken off the preseason PUP and Walter Thurmond went on the official in-season PUP.
The Seahawks decide to roll, at least for now, with two quarterbacks, five running backs, three tight ends, and six receivers. I'm a little surprised that Kregg Lumpkin beat out Vai Taua (though it looks like his PCL strain last night may have cost him his chance at the 53), and once again, Ben Obomanu survived the final cuts to make the roster. Anthony McCoy's late preseason performance likely made the Seahawks confident enough to go with three tight ends, and it's very surprising that James Carpenter was taken off the PUP. This should mean, I think, that he's less than six weeks away from being ready to go, which is encouraging. Charly Martin is a nice addition to the roster after a strong preseason showing, beating out fourth round pick last year Kris Durham and former third rounder Deon Butler.
On defense, Marcus Trufant beat out Phillip Adams for the last defensive back spot and will now fight for snaps as a nickelback. He has value as a backup cornerback as well. Mike Morgan beat out Korey Toomer for a spot on the linebacker corps, and Chris Maragos survived as Earl Thomas' primary backup. The impressive preseason by Jeron Johnson earned him a spot as Kam Chancellor's primary backup, and hot damn, this defensive back corps has some exciting players.
The Seahawks official 53-man roster, for today only, because I would expect them to start trolling the roster cuts league-wide, um, now, looks like this:
