Here’s how the Seahawks’ 53-man roster looks after the club made 22 moves today to reach the league-mandated limit:

Reminder: today's Seahawks roster is not a finished product | HeraldNet.com - Seattle Sidelines
In 2011, the day after cut day, Seahawks released Pep Levingston, Jeff Reed, Junior Siavii and David Vobora. Claimed off of waivers Landon Cohen, Steven Hauschka Jarriel King and Al Woods. 2010 - day after cut day released Kevin Ellison, Steve Vallos and Mansfield Wrotto. Claimed off of waivers Evan Dietrich-Smith and Nate Ness. Traded for Stacy Andrews.

What's next: The Seahawks could use depth at linebacker, one reason I was a little surprised to see the team release Toomer, a rookie fifth-round choice with speed. Another linebacker, Matt McCoy, landed on injured reserve. Seattle also could consider pursuing a slot receiver as insurance against lingering injury concerns for Doug Baldwin.

Butler, Durham waived
That’s a lot of moves on what was a moving day for Carroll and his staff. "These guys have brought so much across the board," Carroll said after Thursday’s 21-3 victory over the Oakland Raiders that tied an appropriate bow on the Seahawks’ 4-0 preseason. "We had a very strong feeling about these guys. "What’s happened is that they’ve created value for themselves in our program. If we have to go back to guys we can’t keep on the roster, or can’t keep on the practice squad, we know we have guys out there that can play our style of football and can understand it."

Eying the opener, focused on getting better
What makes this 4-0 different from that 4-0 as the Seahawks adjust their blinders toward the Sept. 9 opener against the Cardinals in Arizona? Veteran cornerback Marcus Trufant remembers one and is relishing the other. "It’s one of those things where you just try to keep getting better and better, and this team has done a good job of that," Trufant said in the locker room at CenturyLink Field on Thursday night after the 21-3 victory over the Raiders. Satisfied? Not these guys. As Thomas put it after his interception return for a TD in the victory over the Chiefs, "We’re young and we’re hungry."

Also interesting is the team elected to active G James Carpenter from the physically unable to perform list. Carpenter has been recovering from a severe knee injury suffered in late November. By placing him on the active roster, it appears the team feels he will be able to contribute sooner than later.

-- Seattle Seahawks (over/under 7.5): There's been a lot of summer buzz about Russell Wilson, and if I'm not driving the bandwagon (my colleague Doug Farrar was very early to the Wilson story, up close and personal), I'm at least sitting in a good seat. But even if Wilson doesn't justify the love, this offense should be just fine in the hands of Matt Flynn. And the Seahawks surely grab your attention with their defense (the secondary might be the NFL's best), their significant home-field advantage and a manageable schedule. Seattle just completed a dominant 4-0 preseason, outscoring opponents by 78 points, and while that doesn't guarantee a thing going forward, a strong August has correlated to a strong season over the last couple of decades (mind you, it didn't help Seattle in 2009, when a 4-0 preseason led to a 5-11 mark). I'm expecting the Seahawks to post a winning record in 2012, and they should challenge San Francisco for the division title.

Seahawks.com Blog | By the (preseason) numbers "
The Seahawks didn’t just lead the preseason in most points scored (122) and fewest points allowed (44), they tallied 14 more than the second-highest scoring team (the Ravens) and allowed nine fewer than the team that yielded the next-lowest total (the 49ers).

Ball-hawking defense adds to its tally | Seattle Seahawks - The News Tribune
The Seahawks led the NFC in turnover differential through the first three exhibition games at plus-five, having forced eight turnovers. The turnovers helped the Hawks power to the league’s best scoring differential of plus-60 (101-41).

Conventional doesn't suit Pete Carroll. Never did in college. Certainly doesn't calling the shots in the NFL. Since taking control of the Seattle Seahawks, he's given second chances to those with checkered pasts at previous NFL stops, tried players in nontraditional positions and given lower round picks plenty of chances to make their mark.

Moffitt says he’s ready for season opener | Seahawks Insider
"John did fine," Seattle head coach Pete Carroll said. "He was kind of giddy in there. He came back after just a couple of days of practice and got some play time. I don’t know how he played so much, but he made it through and he’s healthy and all that, so that’s a big-big plus for us."

Choosing Skelton deals another hit to Kolb - NFC West Blog - ESPN
Skelton becomes the fourth quarterback in four seasons to open a regular season as the Cardinals' starter. Kevin Kolb (2011), Derek Anderson (2010) and Kurt Warner (2009) were the previous three. Neither Kolb nor Anderson remained the starter past the seventh regular-season game.

The team traded backup safety Colin Jones to Carolina. San Francisco will reportedly receive a seventh-round choice in return, presumably from 2014 or later given that the Panthers traded a 2013 seventh-rounder to Oakland for Louis Murphy.
