Seahawks Sign RB Lonyae Miller and G Rishaw Johnson to practice squad

Mark J. Rebilas-US PRESSWIRE - Presswire

The Seahawks signed G Rishaw Johnson back to the practice squad and added RB Lonyae Miller, while releasing TE Sean McGrath and placing LB Korey Toomer on injured reserve.

Here's a scouting report on RB Lonyae Miller from ScoutTheSeahawks' and Field Gulls' Derek Stephens, who scouted Miller when he came out of Fresno State in 2010. Miller went undrafted and has spent time with the Raiders and Cowboys.

-----

Positives: Athletic-looking back with muscular frame. Impressive first-step burst from the backfield. Commits to the hole decisively, clears it and gets to the 2nd level rapidly. Exhibits solid cut-back vision and displays ability to extend through contact when he's able to keep his weight forward. Possesses some short area re-direct ability when asked to break down in space. Possesses size and length to be a capable blocker out of the backfield.

Negatives: Lacks a 2nd gear to pull away from secondaries and will even be chased down by linebackers with average speed at times. Is not a reliable target out of the backfield, lacking soft hands and adequate coordination to consistently pluck the ball. Gets his head upfield a bit hearly and will flash the occasional concentration lapse on targets in the flat. Is not a motivated blocker, and will get sloppy with his technique at times. Gets too upright, too often through the hole and is far too easy to bring down in these instances, considering his size. Will stop his feet rather than churn them when stopped on contact.

Summary: Miller has some potential considering his explosive first step and power capability, but he doesn't seem to know how to put it all together yet. In a single-cut system, Miller could flourish if he learns to play better on contact, and could see an increased role if he's ever to become a better receiver. As of right now, he's one-dimensional and a 3rd/4th ‘back at best who will need to be good on special teams if he wants to stick in the NFL, with his current skill set.
