Giving Chip Kelly more power is smart move for the Eagles. | SportsonEarth.com : Kenneth Arthur Article
A tweet by NBC's Mike Florio on Friday that said "something big" was about to go down in Philadelphia, sparking rumors that Chip Kelly might be on his way out following the firing this Wednesday of vice president of personnel Tom Gamble, a close friend of Kelly's. While that news would have certainly been an early frontrunner for "Shocker of the Year" in the NFL, the real story turned out to be less exciting, but possibly more surprising.
Andy Dalton, Cincinnati Bengals under pressure NFL wild-card weekend | The MMQB with Peter King

John Idzik Fired, and Rebuilding in New York
After two seasons on the job, Jets general manager John Idzik was fired on Black Monday. Idzik has been loudly criticized for his personnel decisions — more on this in a bit — but even the anti-Idzik crowd would recognize that firing a general manager after just two years is unusual. Firing a general manager who drafted the defensive rookie of the year in one of those two seasons, and who never was permitted to hire his own head coach, only adds to the perception that Idzik’s tenure in New York was unique.
FOOTBALL OUTSIDERS: Innovative Statistics, Intelligent Analysis | Saturday Wild Card Playoff Preview 2015
Saturday's wild card games bring us something new and something old. The NFC game gives us the first-ever playoff broadcast on ESPN, featuring only the second playoff appearance by a team with a losing record in a non-strike season and only the fourth playoff appearance by the Arizona Cardinals since they moved to the desert in 1988. The AFC game gives us Baltimore and Pittsburgh for what seems like the nine zillionth time, switched up for the new year with a special "no pass defense" allowed edition.
FOOTBALL OUTSIDERS: Innovative Statistics, Intelligent Analysis | Sunday Wild Card Playoff Preview 2015
The narrative that links the two Sunday wild-card games is four teams seeking long-awaited playoff success. Cincinnati has lost on three straight wild-card weekends. Dallas is just 1-3 in the playoffs with Tony Romo at quarterback. Detroit, of course, barely even gets to the postseason in the first place. Only Indianapolis has had any recent playoff success, and that took a ridiculous comeback against Kansas City last year... which was followed up a week later by a colossal egg-laying in Foxborough against the Patriots.

Maxx Williams, Markus Golden & Melvin Gordon impress | Seahawks Draft Blog
A few days ago we pondered the stock of Minnesota’s Maxx Williams. He announced his decision to declare as a redshirt sophomore — perhaps taking advantage of a paper-thin tight end class. Featuring in a run-heavy offense and used as an H-back/lead blocker on a lot of snaps, it was hard to judge his stock. How athletic is he? What is he capable of in the passing game?

Gamble's dismissal shows that Kelly does not have complete authority
What Howie wants, Howie gets. There is no other conclusion to draw from the Eagles' dismissal of Tom Gamble, formerly their vice president of player personnel, formerly the man in the franchise's front office whom Chip Kelly respected most, formerly a thorn who apparently pricked general manager Howie Roseman one too many times.
Is this Marshawn Lynch’s best season? | Seahawks | The Seattle Times
So much of the appreciation for Lynch centers on the moments of high drama — his Beast Quake runs, for instance — but there is equal beauty in the mundane.
Is Seahawks coach Pete Carroll the secondary whisperer? | HeraldNet.com - Seattle Sidelines
It’s no secret that Seahawks coach Pete Carroll knows a thing or two about defense, and about passing defense in particular. His current team is in the midst of a historical run, allowing the fewest points in the league for the third straight season, and Seattle has given up the fewest total yards and passing yards in each of the past two seasons. Considering Carroll spent almost his entire coaching career as a defensive backs coach or defensive coordinator before becoming a head coach, it shouldn’t be a surprise that his teams excel on defense, but when you look back on what some of his team’s have accomplished, it appears Carroll might be even better at coaching a secondary than you might have realized.
