Be Humble, Be Angry... Be True.

This is my first post. I want catharsis after what I saw tonight.

Firstly, I am proud that despite the bad start to the season, despite the misfires that led to a 3-3 start, the Seahawks came one play within winning the Super Bowl. This is important. Because there is a thread that runs through this very crazy season.

Anytime the Hawks moved away from their identity for 2014-2015, we got clobbered.

  • Remember the fascination with Harvin and the jet sweep?
  • Remember the circus of recriminations and "Not Black Enough?
  • Remember how we lauded the rotation of the defensive line from last year? Next man up?
  • The lack of versatility when you limited play option.

Tonight was a microcosm going away from the roots of the team. Why abandon the run to throw into heavy coverage? When you had a fair amount of time on the clock AND some downs to spare? And what was defense doing on the Pat's final and winning drive?

Consider also the following.

  • Some of it was forced- early injuries to Lane, Avril to concussion, pregame hurts to the LOB. Who do you have when Kam, ET3, and Sherm gets hurt?
  • If you really want Russell Wilson to consistently throw against the best, then you need wilier receivers.
  • Tonight the penalties should have killed us alone. Run into the kicker (missed call)? Baldwin drilling the ball (Angry Doug, did you think a 10 point lead was enough?) Bennett offside when you need contain and press?
  • Sherm, would you trade that mouthing for a 2nd ring?

Sorry about the bullet points. If you think this is a garbled first time post, damn right. I tried eloquence and nearly turned the screen off. I am useless the rest of the week...

But the optimist part of me wants to also point this out. This could be the best thing for the next few years of the Seahawks franchise. How?

  • You sit down with your franchise quarterback in the contract negotiations and point out that if he wants to drive the offense, then there has to be an offense to drive. You retain Lynch, Turbo and see whether CMike takes that leap forward next year. Don't cripple your team, Russell, that is the lesson for this year and beyond. The Hawks already have the core on defence, the team just needs to fine tune the core of offence around the best QB we ever had. You do this right and you can win NFC West year in year out. Right now you are riding the crest of the NFC and the cream of the AFC looks old or misfiring.
  • You use the model of Kevin Williams and identify the best of free agent vets and point out to this cohort "This is your last chance of a winning platform. Choose either that or money" Please remember what the Harvin trade will cost us in the draft.
  • You treat injuries early.
  • You do not beholden the team to anyone.
  • You take the hurt, the anger and you make it work for you the right way. (Sigh, looking at your rant Angry Doug). There is swagger, and there is believing in your own press releases.
God Bless all of you. Go HAWKS!
