The Seattle Seahawks lost to the Arizona Cardinals 34-31 after a game-winning kick by Chandler Catanzaro on Saturday. With this loss, the Seahawks have fallen to the 4-seed in the NFC playoff race for now. While they clinched the NFC West last week, this loss clearly illustrates the inconsistencies with the team.

The offensive line continues to struggle plus any time either the offense or the defense starts clicking the opposite side doesn’t perform well. Additionally, the injury to Tyler Lockett is a devastating blow to an already-manic offense.

Here is the current breakdown of the playoff seeds in the NFC:

  1. Dallas Cowboys* (13-2)
  2. Atlanta Falcons* (10-5)
  3. Seattle Seahawks* (9-5-1)
  4. Green Bay Packers (9-6)
  5. New York Giants* (10-5)
  6. Detroit Lions (9-6)

There are two matches in Week 17 that will have playoff implications for multiple teams:

  • Green Bay Packers (9-6) at Detroit Lions (9-6)
  • New York Giants (10-5) at Washington Redskins (8-6-1)

Immediately outside the playoff bubble sit the Washington Redskins (8-6-1) and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (8-7). Seven teams were eliminated this week: Baltimore Ravens, Buffalo Bills, Carolina Panthers, Denver Broncos, Indianapolis Colts, Minnesota Vikings, New Orleans Saints, and the Tennessee Titans.

Here is the complete list of all teams that have been officially eliminated from playoff contention in both conferences:

NFC

  • Arizona Cardinals
  • Carolina Panthers
  • Chicago Bears
  • Los Angeles Rams
  • Minnesota Vikings
  • New Orleans Saints
  • Philadelphia Eagles
  • San Francisco 49ers

AFC

  • Baltimore Ravens
  • Buffalo Bills
  • Cincinnati Bengals
  • Cleveland Browns
  • Denver Broncos
  • Indianapolis Colts
  • Jacksonville Jaguars
  • New York Jets
  • San Diego Chargers
  • Tennessee Titans

The Cleveland Browns won their first game of the season versus the San Diego Chargers. In the AFC playoff picture, the Oakland Raiders quarterback Derek Carr broke his fibula and will be out for the rest of the season.

The Seahawks travel to San Francisco next weekend to face the 49ers. They need a win plus they need both the Atlanta Falcons and Detroit Lions (two games left) to lose for them to claim the other coveted bye week in the playoffs.

Edit: This article was written before the Cowboys-Lions game on Monday night. Seahawks currently hold the 3 seed in the playoffs.
