One of the most exciting weeks of the year for fans of the NFL has come and gone, and once again it didn't disappoint. U.S. Court of Appeals, gas mask bongs and Sam Bradford doing head-scratching things; just another week in the National Football League.
Home Cookin'
Some really great content may have gotten buried on your Field Gulls radar with all the draft updates, so if you haven't checked out any of these posts, get on it!
Evan Hill kicks us off with a terrific piece on the championship belt wearing architect of the Seahawks, John Schneider.
The talented Jacson Bevens released the Cigar Thoughts Retrospective e-book for the 2015 Seahawks season this week, and I don't need to tell you how incredible it is. Buy it, read it, tell your dog about it and then read it again.
Mike Bottemiller had an interesting take on the Seahawks selection of Rees Odhiambo, and that article on one of the more puzzling selections can be found here.
No Real in the Field (Gulls) this week, but Rob and Kenny delivered FOUR episodes of 3000 NFL Mock Draft this week, the last two of which are going over the selections from the first two days of the draft. Rob and Kenny did some incredible work for all of us this draft season and they cap it off wonderfully, listen here.
Seahawks Stuff
The Seahawks kicked off draft weekend by making a couple of free agent signings, with tight end Brandon Williams and defensive end Tavares Barnes both signing one-year deals with the team.
This isn't news necessarily, but definitely something we can all get behind:
Dear @PeteCarroll,
— Doug Baldwin Jr (@DougBaldwinJr) April 30, 2016
We are thrilled with the new teammates. One condition. Nobody wears #24 for years to come.
Sincerely,
The Players
Finally, the draft happened! All Seahawks draftees and UDFA signings can be found right here.
Brady and the Beard
The most ridiculous controversy in NFL history refused to go gently into that good night, as the U.S. Second Court of Appeals reinstated quarterback Tom Brady's suspension early this week. The United States Second Court of Appeals had to get involved into a situation surrounding air in a ball. Really.
Not-Big Mike Williams is back in the NFL, signing a one-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs this week. After working out for both the Patriots and Bengals last month, the bearded Mike Williams finds himself competing for a spot behind Jeremy Maclin.
Crappy Quarterback Corner
Lost amongst the UDFA shuffle yesterday was Brian Hoyer finding a new home, agreeing to terms with the Chicago Bears. The former Texan signed a one-year deal to backup nice guy Jay Cutler.
Noted bust JaMarcus Russell told Sports Illustrated this week he would play for free to get another shot, which will almost certainly not help him at all.
Fresh off selecting Jared Goff first overall, the Rams are reportedly fielding offers for Nick Foles and are open to moving Case Keenum, as well. Whether a team is open to giving anything up for either of the two quarterbacks is yet to be determined.
Unhappy with the addition of quarterback Carson Wentz in Philadelphia, Sam Bradford has reportedly requested a trade and has stopped answering head coach Doug Pederson's phone calls. The only salary more laughable then Bradford's is JaMarcus Russell's imaginary zero-dollar salary.
Defense
The Cincinnati Bengals released veteran linebacker AJ Hawk this past week, after one season with the team. The former Packer started eleven games last season and at age 32 could find himself looking for a job deep into the summer.
Overpaid from the moment he signed on the dotted line, Brandon Carr has accepted a pay cut to remain with the Dallas Cowboys. Set to earn $9.1 million this season, Carr and the Cowboys restructured it down to $5.5 million for the veteran cornerback.
Dolphins safety Reshad Jones will be sitting out all team activities leading up to training camp in hopes of landing a new deal. The highest paid strong safety in the league, Jones is looking for added security to his deal after a career year in 2015.
Cornerback Jamar Taylor found himself involved in a draft day trade, with Taylor headed to Cleveland after the Browns and Dolphins swapped seventh round picks.
That's it for this week in the NFL but make sure to keep a close eye on Field Gulls for all your news regarding incoming UDFA's and more.
