Jeremy Lane sends ominous tweet about his future

It’s been another frustrating year for Seattle Seahawks cornerback Jeremy Lane, and it doesn’t look like things are improving for him. Check out these two tweets from the sixth-year man out of Northwestern State.

And in case he’s exercised the delete button, here’s a screenshot for extra confirmation of him saying he’s been benched.

Coming off a lackluster 2016 season, Lane was (for all intents and purposes, wrongly) ejected in Seattle’s season-opening loss at the Green Bay Packers, and has missed Seattle’s last two games due to a groin injury suffered early in the first quarter against the Indianapolis Colts. In his absence, rookie Shaquill Griffin has been very impressive at the right cornerback position, and Justin Coleman has been a steady performer at slot corner, including an interception for a touchdown against the Colts.

It’s worth noting that the NFL trade deadline is October 31st, and there were reports even during preseason that Seattle was gauging trade interest for Lane, alongside Alex Collins (who was ultimately cut) and Jermaine Kearse (traded to the New York Jets for Sheldon Richardson). Lane remained on the 53-man roster and was announced as the starting RCB when week 1 came around.

The play of Griffin and Coleman, combined with the impending return of Deshawn Shead, may be an indicator that the Seahawks are looking to move on from Lane, who signed a four-year, $23 million extension after the 2015 season. Lane’s $5,250,000 cap hit for 2017 is 28th among all NFL corners, and just $250,000 behind A.J. Bouye, who signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars in free agency and is a key part of the #1 pass defense in the NFL.

Of course, this is a lot of speculation based off of two tweets, but it’s hard not to see the possibility that Lane’s time in Seattle may be coming to an end.
