The Seattle Seahawks and Philadelphia Eagles faced off on Sunday night, the first weekend in December and Seattle came away convincing winners 24-10 over Philly, who had come into the game with the best record in the NFL.
This is not the first time these two teams have met in primetime the first weekend in December. In the recorded history of mankind the Seahawks and Eagles have met in a nationally televised game in the first weekend of December twice prior to Sunday evening. The outcome in each of those matchups was similar to the result fans saw on the field on Sunday Night Football.
The first time these two franchises met under such circumstances was 2005, when the 9-2 Seahawks traveled to Philadelphia to take on the Eagles in a blizzard, but not even the blizzard could slow down Mike Holmgren’s offense. The Hawks went on to win that game 42-0 on their way to making it to Super Bowl XL.
After that it would be another nine years before it would happen again. In 2014, the Seahawks traveled to Philadelphia to take on a 9-3 Eagles squad that had been tearing up the league with Chip Kelly’s offense putting points on the board left and right. That Eagles squad had averaged 33.8 points per game while going 4-1 in November, but the Seattle defense stopped them in their tracks, allowing only 14 points, with half of those points coming on a six-play, 14 yard touchdown drive after Jon Ryan fumbled a snap on a first quarter punt. After that drive the potent Eagles offensive attack managed only 119 yards over the final three quarters en route to a 24-14 loss. Following that game Seattle would run the table on its way to Super Bowl XLIX.
That brings us to this year. Behind the strength of its 24-10 victory, Seattle now sits in a very favorable position in relation to both the playoffs and winning the division. And after the way the team played on Sunday, it’s not hard to imagine this Seahawks team running the table.
It’s dangerous fight fate, and it seems as though this team could run the table all the way to back-to-back games at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis in January and February.
