As you might expect, day two of NFL free agency has been a hell of a lot less exciting than day one. I suppose one of the more interesting things to happen was the Carolina Panthers trading defensive end Kony Ealy to the New England Patriots, swapping their third-round pick (72) for New England’s second-rounder (64). Meanwhile, it’s been all quiet on the Seahawks front, as no new pivotal updates have been made on their pursuit of Green Bay Packers offensive guard T.J. Lang.
Speaking of the Packers, that’ll be the new home for tight end Martellus Bennett, whose one year stint with New England ended in a Super Bowl win, doubling the Bennett Brothers ring count to two. Martellus caught a career-high seven touchdowns, grabbing 55 passes for 701 yards. He was the team’s de facto #1 TE due to the repeated injury problems for Rob Gronkowski.
It’s a rare foray into free agency for Ted Thompson, and also a sign that they will not be keeping Jared Cook. The contract is reportedly three years and $21 million, with no incentives.
This is only relevant to Seahawks fans due to the awesomeness of the Bennett Brothers, and also the fact that Seattle is at Green Bay this season. Barring any injuries — this is what happened to Michael last season when Seattle was at New England — we will be treated to Bennett vs. Bennett later in the year, and that should be fun.
