Who’s opposite Richard Sherman for Week 1?

You are not afraid! You will answer the questions!

NFL: NFC Divisional-Seattle Seahawks at Atlanta Falcons

John David Mercer-USA TODAY Sports

Today marks the kickoff of a countdown... to kickoff. Every day between May 18 and the preseason opener at the San Diego Chargers’ place, the readers of Field Gulls will be presented with a brief general discussion piece, prompted by a poll.

Yes, every day, without fail. One short post on a hot Seahawky topic, daily until we play footballs again. Call it a Gull Poll, if you’re so inclined. The questions will range from...

  • prediction types (how many more years do you believe will Pete Carroll coach?)
  • to league-wide (who was the steal of the first round of the 2017 draft?)
  • to timely (what team is the best fit for Colin Kaepernick?)
  • to emotion-based (how do you feel about Blair Walsh, Seattle Seahawks kicker?)

...to everything in between. Please feel free to suggest future questions in the comments at any time, or click on my profile name and email me an idea, or hit me up on twitter by looking up @johndavidfraley. We already have a couple dozen polls chosen but obviously we’re always looking for inspiration and fresh ideas.

The series starts with one of the great unknowns of the 2017 season — the Seahawks’ apparent open competition at right cornerback. Now that Richard Sherman is back in the fold for the fall, pretty much, injuries mean a non-Byron Maxwell (2014), non-Cary Williams (2015), non-DeShawn Shead (2016) person will be the starter Week 1 at Green Bay. Fourth new starter in four seasons.

Who will it be? Candidates of course start with the veteran Jeremy Lane, the rookies Shaquill Griffin and Mike Tyson, plus the relatively unproven foursome of Demetrius McCray, Pierre Desir, DeAndre Elliott and Neiko Thorpe. A cap casualty from [insert hated team of your choice] is also a possibility, if development of the youngsters stalls.

Lane has the experience. But most observers called his 2016 a disappointment.

Griffin has the draft status but this is the Pete Carroll Seahawks we’re talking about. Competition, not pedigree, will decide starters.

Tyson? Who knows. Make your own boxing joke here.

The others have been around but not seen a ton of snaps: in 2016, Thorpe logged 97 defensive plays for Seattle and Elliott 29. McCray sat out all of last season but did start 16 games for the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2013-15. Desir was last with the Chargers, with whom he appeared in five games last year.

So who will it be?
