Three quarterbacks were taken in the first 12 picks of the 2017 NFL Draft: The Chicago Bears chose Mitch Trubisky at 2nd overall, the Kansas City Chiefs chose Patrick Mahomes at 10th overall, and the Houston Texans chose Deshaun Watson at 12th overall. All three teams had to trade up to select them. Earlier this offseason, I broke down the traits of each of the quarterbacks on FieldGulls (here, here, and here), and I came to the conclusion that none of these quarterbacks received a first round grade.

In the video, I discussed the trade between the Chiefs and the Buffalo Bills that landed them Mahomes. I also broke down his fit and gave a high-level summary of the things he needs to improve on in order to be successful in the NFL.

Overall, here are the grades I assigned based on the player, scheme fit, and draft capital invested in each quarterback:

  • Mitch Trubisky, Chicago Bears - D
  • Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs, C+
  • Deshaun Watson, Houston Texans, C-

What do you think? Do you believe that the Bears, Chiefs, and Texans made a mistake in trading up for these QBs? Or do you think they made a good decision in executing their respective trade?
